VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict said Monday that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction.

The Church "should also protect man from the destruction of himself. A sort of ecology of man is needed," the pontiff said in a holiday address to the Curia, the Vatican's central administration.

"The tropical forests do deserve our protection. But man, as a creature, does not deserve any less."

I can't help but think that its a good thing that England went through the Reformation, as it greatly diminished the relevance of the Catholic church to define the public debate on these issues (as it does in this and other countries).

I'm saying that as a Catholic, I will not defend such idiocy. The Church has had a tradition of infallibility of what the Pope says, but I side with some contemporary, and controversial no less, theologians who disagree with that notion.
