Fellow Canadians!

I'm trying to plan my move to the US next year and was planning on renting a U-Haul trailer for the stuff I want to bring down with me. Can someone tell me where to get the forms for Customs and if anyone has crossed this way ~ how easy is it? Are their fees involved?

If you are bringing your things with you at the time you use your K-1 Visa, then you do not need any forms and there is no fee.

You just need to number your boxes, and make a list of the contents of your boxes (just a general description, like "bedding", "clothes", "books", etc.). If you are bringing any electronic items, you will need to write the serial numbers on your list.

You are not allowed any live plants of any kind.

At the POE, an Officer will take a look in the moving van and you'll be on your way after your K-1 Visa paperwork has been dealt with.

Ahhhhh, such helpful information! Thanks so much... I guess that's gonna be the easiest part of getting in to the US! Hard part will be waiting for the K-1 Visa! After reading all the IMBRA implications I'm starting to wonder if 12 months will be long enough!!! ugh.

I rented a U-haul and moved myself down. I marked the boxes, plus made a "table" on MS word. Made up a bunch of headings such as "Item" "Serial number--for big item electronics" I didnt label every single item, but tried as possible to group them together. More or less did it to kil time prior to the move, plus give that organized look to it. Customs guy said it was a better job than he would have ever did!! lol Never did look in my Uhaul truck. Think he just stamped my document and handed it back to me. No fees at all. I crossed in Maine. Cheers

Probably a dumb question but can I bring food? I have these big containers of flour and sugar and other baking supplies. I hate to toss them all. Anyone know?

As long as the food doesn't fall into the "dairy, meat, vegetable" category, you should be fine. If I were you, I would put all your non-perishable items in a box and just label "kitchen~ non perishable items".

if you're moving yourself in your car or a U-Haul you *maybe* can, but if you hire a moving company they will absolutely NOT take any food stuffs.

Check the Customs and Border Patrol website for info on moving personal goods.

Yeah we are going to use a Uhaul. I know it seems dumb but he does not have baking stuff and it is expensive so I would love to bring it all.
