Oil industry analysts at Merrill Lynch say the price of oil could fall to as low as $25 a barrel in 2009 – before moving up again.

And the CEO of Gulf Oil says the price of gas could drop to $1 a gallon before long.

Early Friday, Dec. 5, oil was selling for just under $43 a barrel in New York, and the national average price of gas – according to AAA – is $1.77 a gallon.

Diesel, according to ProMiles, is averaging $2.59 a gallon on Friday.

No predictions on how low the price of diesel may go were published on Friday.

'Bout damn time!

It's 1.50 gal (reg unleaded) in OK right now - and still 1.78 around New Orleans. Don't understand why it isn't a blanket price across the states, and it is always higher in the producing states  .

i always figured ms would be cheap for gas seeming as its poor and everything, but no. i think it's about $1.65 for regular, doesn't make any sense to me.

As an aside, why is diesel fuel still so much higher than gasoline? I recall in years past, that diesel was always less expensive. Is this artificial price fixing, to ensure "trucked" goods pricing remain stable?

West Virginia is one of the poorest States in the nation and they are paying an average of $1.913. Transportation costs and high taxes are the reason. Southern States actually have relatively cheap gas. Oklahoma and Mississippi are a bit pricey, but not bad overall. I'd say taxes on the fuel is also the culprit.

Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) (also spelled “sulphur”) is a term used to describe a standard for defining diesel fuel with substantially lowered sulfur contents. As of 2006, almost all of the petroleum-based diesel fuel available in Europe and North America is of a ULSD type.

The move to lower sulfur content is expected to allow the application of newer emissions control technologies that should substantially lower emissions of particulate matter from diesel engines. This change occurred first in the European Union and is now happening in North America. New emissions standards, dependent on the cleaner fuel, have been in effect for automobiles in the United States since model year 2007.

A promising new source of ULSD is the Gas to liquids process being pioneered by Shell, which uses natural gas as a feedstock to create a low-sulfur synthetic diesel fuel.

I think there is price fixing as well.

I'll bet the sales of underground fuel storage tanks will rise. This cannot possibly last very long. Heck, gas was around a dollar per gallon 17 years ago.

In some places, gas was less than a buck less than 10 years ago. I remember that gas was usually below a buck at least up until 2000 on the GA side of the TN / GA state line.

We need a break somewhere. The USCIS will be taking all my money. Hell, I remember the days I filled my Honda Accord up with $11.00. Those are the days long gone, but wouldn't mind a bit if they returned to stay.

Tell that to Jennifer Granholm (D), the governor of Michigan! She got re-elected against multi-billionaire ####### Devos ® in 2006. Now if there is a state-wide recession, why not put in a guy that knows how to get money? To tell you the truth, I am still dumbfounded/baffled that Romney lost to McNobrain.

The point I wanted to make is Granholm (D) raised taxes and the results came in last month: October unemployment rate of 9.3%!!!!

And for some reason (I think) Obama appointed Granholm to join his economic transition team! :o
