congrats!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Here's what happened on my interview.

I left the hotel early before 6:30 am and waited outside the consulate door. It was cold and dark still and was the first in line. Then around 7ish somebody else arrived. I forgot to look at my watch what time the security opened the door as I was excited and anxious to get it for warmth and to get the interview done and over with. The security asked for my appointment letter which I presented him and then passport. He then asked if I have any form of electronics with me like cell phone, etc. I said no and he made me go line up on the left door with the sign for immigrant and waited for the next security to ask me in. As soon as I was in I was asked for my letter and passport and to empty out my pockets, jackets, and place my belonging in 2 bins one with the documents and other with my jacket and scarf and gloves and sweater (due to zipper). I was then asked to go through the "screening" same as the ones in airports and since there was no beeps and sounds when I went through they did not bother using the wand sensor (whatever it is correctly called). Then I was told to get all my things and was given back my passport clipped with the letter and an instruction sheet with a small card with letter and number on it. The instruction tells you how to arrange your documents to be presented upstairs at the 19th floor. When I got down another security pointed to set of seats in a waiting area in front of the elevator where you wait until your letter is called and be escorted up to the 19th floor. When my letter was called and another mother and child the clipped letter with passport, instruction and number was taken from us and up we go to the waiting area. We were instructed to wait to be called and he went in and gave them the clipped papers. Around 7:45 am or 7:55 I was paged to go to window 11 where a nice lady was waiting. She asked for my name and how long am I married and if I'm in the same address still here in canada. Asked for my medical to be submitted and xpresspost envelope and picture. As she opened my medical she noticed that the doctor wrote somewhere in the form of my history of having thyroid cancer and she asked me what symptoms I had that led to me being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. So I told her about the incident that led to the discovery and diagnosis of thyroid cancer. Was asked if I was operated on and I did and asked to see any scar which I gladly showed her, then she said it's nice healing because it's not noticeable. Then after that she continue flipping and reading through my submitted documents and once in a while look at the computer screen and type something in and fill up some data here and there with red inked pen. She then told me to go back to the waiting area to be called back for finger printing. So off to the waiting area, aroun 8:20 am I was called back to window 11 and had my finger prints captured. The first attempt wasn't as succesful and clear so I had to do it again and the second time was more clear and to the standard they need. The she told me to go back and wait for someone else to call me. Honestly the whole time I was there it was mixed feeling, panicky, nervous, and others I can't find the words to describe. Around 8:45 a man called me to proceed to window #8. As I walked to it I was more nervous as there was a door with sign #8 I thought it was an office of some form, but as I opened the door after knocking I saw that indeed there was a window in there just like the others without door and same as #11. Then a kind man with glasses called me in as I opened the door and call out my name. He then told me that I can take off my bulky jacket and hang it by the coat hook on the wall then as I get settled in front of the window he asked me to scan my right index finger on the finger print reader on the right side of the window then asked if all the information in the form are correct and true and after answering yes he then told me to raise my right hand and if I swear that everything is true. He then looked the computer monitor and said that's good I think somewhere in the room was a camera which captured me when I sweared. Then he asked me to sign the form. Then he discussed about my paper and asked how long I'm married, and as for bonafide proof of marriage he said he's not going to ask for anything as having a 3 1/2 son in this marriage is proof enough. He then asked if I'm working and I said no full time homemaker which he corrected oh you do have a job and it's full time my job's name is my son's name. He then looked through my other files and came across my medical report and asked me about my thyroid cancer and if i get chemotherapy. I explained to him that my condition requires a different form of radiation therapy more of taking a radioiodine pill and in seclusion in the hospital for couple of days until it clears through my system. Then he asked how I am and I said I'm fine for now but needs monitoring from time to time. He said he understands my situation as he was diagnosed with a different form of cancer last year and there's test here and there every few months and monitoring. He is warm and he calm me down a lot. Then he checked on the computer and said it is very slow that morning, but nothing to do with my case. He then said that he cannot print it soon enough for me to get it this week as they'll be I think on holiday starting wednesday afternoon for thanksgiving, but told me I'll get my passport with visa and documents early next week and I'll be spending christmas in the US. Then he said it's done. I thanked him and back to the hotel I went.

By the way he did not take my x-ray and told me to keep it and bring it to the US with me and just present it to my doctor there for their record in the future for comparison if need for x-ray comparisson arise. He also asked where my husband is and I told him in the hotel with my son and asked where he works too like company and what sort of job. He then checked on the income tax report and said we're fine.

later that day we took the train back to toronto. then this morning i woke up early and checked canadapost website and it showed that the xpresspost was at montreal post office as of 10 am yesterday and since it's next day i waited for it to be updated to out for delivery by 8:30 in the morning. I was supposed to go do some blood work today but postponed it for tomorrow so I don't miss the xpresspost, then around 2:30ish the doorbell rang and xpresspost handed to me by mailman after I signed a sheet of paper.

Now I'm starting to pack as we're flying out of toronto next thursday. I hope all goes well at Pearson airport POE.

The line starts on the left side of the front door where the round security camera is located outside the building. Once they open the door you'll be directed to line on the left or right side of the door inside for screening as left side is for immigrant line and the right side door to security is for non immigrant( from what I remember from the sign posted)

That's how my interview went.

Excellent summary of your experience dnb. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Myself, I'm nervous and excited all at the same time about this interview. My wife is coming up here today to and we're going to celebrate American Thanksgiving in Canada with my family, then she has to head back to work after the weekend and I'm heading to Montreal for my interview. Wish she could be coming with me, but as I understand she's not required to. I hope it all does smoothly.
