No - as is customary with these things they'll get some freelance ghost-writer or an in-house editor to write it (for peanuts), and Joe will get a royalty check for having his name on the cover.

I love that he's saying he's not cashing in when that's exactly what he's doing. I suspect the truth is that the big publishers probably didn't offer him a whole lot of money.

It's more money than the rest of us are getting for being nobodies...

Well it is.

But here's the deal:

1) Its a one-time book (Joe's popularity is transitory - the further away we get from the election, the fewer people will remember him) which means that the book must be published within the next few months (in a year it will be in the dollar clearance bin)

2) Joe isn't very interesting - the whole basis of his popularity is on the image that the media has constructed of him. This means that big $$$ must be spent marketing the book.

3) Joe won't write or edit the book - they'll have a ghost writer do it from interviews.

4) Book sales are down as publishers (even the big ones) are hurting from the bad economy.

5) The book has a very specific, limited audience.

I suspect what probably happened is that Joe was offered a modest (one time) up-front royalty payment - and zero % of the sales.
