employed vs unemployed

Ok, I am curious as to how many people on here are employed or going to school, or are just unemployed.

After being a part of the LJ community for some time now, I've noticed that there seems to be a large number of people that are waiting for visas that are just unemployed. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me because I've always been someone that has earned his meal. I'm just curious for those people not employed or working what do you do to keep your day busy and are you unemployed by circumstance (i.e. cannot work b/c you are in the US awaiting visas) or by choice.

I don't mean to be judgmental but it seems like in the last few months there are more an more questions about collecting EI or asking questions about remaining in the US for longer periods, etc. I am just wondering how some people can afford the time to just up and leave Canada to live with SOs in the US and not have a job, career or something other than his/her significant other as a purpose in life. And I'm curious as to what happens to a lot of these people after they get visas because they don't strike me as the type of people to be very proactive about pursuing some sort of career afterward.

1. A lot of people are inquiring about collecting EI when in the US while waiting for: getting a job, or getting their green card -- not collecting EI while still in Canada. It isn't all that easy to get a job here, you have to overcome questions about qualifications / education / etc transferring over to the US, so being able to collect EI while looking is helpful. We paid into it, why not use it since it is available?

2. Some people have the means to spend more time with their SO, and they choose to use it in that way. Why judge them for that? When I first moved here, I wasn't in a rush to get a job, I wanted some time to settle in after getting married, get my SSN, my green card, etc. My husband supported and actually encouraged that decision, because at the time we could afford to do so. it's also a good way of gathering evidence of an ongoing relationship (before getting the fiance or spousal visa).

I have lived here for four years. In that time, I have worked in 4 different temporary jobs, all having little to nothing to do for my former career. It took me a while to get over that mentally, because I wanted to continue in my career (I was really good at it if I do say so myself!), but I continually came up against a brick wall, and it was really depressing. But I have let that go, and began keeping my eyes open for something that was challenging, but would use my skills in a different way. I didn't go hard-core searching for something. I have been fortunate and managed to find something -- I start around December 1st.
