K-3 VISA EXPIRED

I need your advise, my wife and childs' K-3 and K-4 visas expired on July 27th of this year. We came back from Colombia a week before it expired, so their I-94 was extended for 2 more years; their AOS is not approved yet. My question is, can they travel outside the US bofore the AOS is approved?

Not without a visa extension.

Nothing stops them from travelling outside the US. It's getting back in that will be a problem. You have no visa. Did you apply for AP with the AOS?

No , I did not apply for AP, and I just learned that to get a visa extension I needed to apply 45 days before it expired. So at this point we are going to postpone our Christmas vacation and wait for their AOS to be approved.

You can get still apply for AP and there is no fee--just send a copy of your AOS NOA with the application. Although, it may be a bit late to get AP approval before Christmas.
