Married Name - Passport

Has anyone changed their names in their Chinese passport? I have changed my name legally after getting married, though I have not obtained a new Chinese passport with the name... not sure if it's necessary or even possible to have a non-Chinese last name in the passport. Anyone experienced this??

For this, you would contact a Chinese Embassy or Consulate directly. They've stopped doing passport renewals etc. by mail so you'll have to go in person. They may answer your question on the phone or email.

Great. Thanks!! It's just kind of annoying b/c their business hours are so short (gov't... what else do I expect) and I will have to take a day off to go in, but yea it's worth checking. Thanks!

Actually the Chinese consulate won't change your last name but they will put an adendum in your passport that says something like "the name on this passport is also XXXXXXX. You must go to the consulate in person to have this done. If you plan on traveling outside the country you will need have it done if you want to book the airline ticket in your married name. Otherwise just book the ticket in your maiden name. You won't have any trouble coming back into the US. They are more interested in your green card.

Thanks so much for the info! Also, the name on my green card will be my maiden name... It was some BS advice my attorney gave me. I should have never hired him (have I known this site sooner)! So now the only official document with my married name is our marriage certificate. Do you think that's a problem?

since you already have your green card and it is in your maiden name I wouldn't bother with the passport. I don't think the Chinese consulate would add the adendum unless your green card is in your married name anyway. Your next cheap opportunity to change your last name will be when you file to remove conditions. There is a form you can file and submit with a fee to do it now. (I don't recall the number you might ask on CFL someone there will know) The main thing is to book any international airline tickets in the same name as your passport. Otherwise the airline won't let you board the plane.

You can try to have your green card issued in your married name prior to your approval, that is what I did.

1) I am not sure about an infopass but it is worth a try.

2) if you get an interview, just mention it to the IO.
