Reminds me of our Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Saying for weeks on end before the election that Canada's economy is great, we're doing well, nothing to worry about here. While the news is screaming recession behind him.

Or the stores name is Going out of business sale... anyone else watched "You don't mess with the Zohan"?

I just noticed the 'fixture sale coming soon' sign... maybe the now hiring sign is for a different business than the current owners have, which seems to be selling clothes, not fixtures.

We went into a Mervyn's nearby with those same signs thinking they'd have some good deals, but we found the prices to be the same you'd pay anywhere else. Mervyn's is notorious for putting on 'sales' that aren't really sale prices.

I thought Mervyns went out of business long ago. There aren't any in Colorado anymore, I think.

Looks like it. I thought they were just closing some of their stores, but I found this news piece...

HAYWARD, CA - Mervyn's announced Friday it will sell off all of the inventory at each of the company's 149 stores and auction off the store leases.

The Mervyn's press release explains the expected bankruptcy announcement came after a "thorough analysis of all available options, including sale of the Company."

Mervyn's CEO, John Goodman added, "We are disappointed with this outcome but the Company's declining liquidity position and the extremely challenging retail environment, together with the fact that we have exhausted all other possibilities, requires that we take this action."

Sales at remaining Mervyn's stores will be held throughout the holiday season.

Hee hee!

I saw something similar here in Phoenix. A handful of Mervyns in the Phoenix area had closing sales starting a couple of weeks ago. Everything in the store was 50-70% off, and all store fixtures were also for sale. I stumbled on it when I was shopping at a nearby store, and went in to check it out. I hadn't seen the sale advertised. I ended up getting some excellent deals on Levi's (half price) and some toys for my niece.

I heard today that all Mervyns stores are closing, and everything will be at least 50% off at all stores. I see nothing about this on the Mervyns Web site.

p.s. Scott, that's a great picture in any context. :)

Maybe the "now hiring" sign is on clearance. Or free. :jest:

I noticed there's another "now hiring" sign hanging inside behind an "everything must go" sign ;)

p.s. Scott, that's a great picture in any context. :)

 Thanks! It's not every day you get a photo opportunity like that one; I'm glad I just happened to have my camera at the time :P
