But its not a phone.

My friend has the iphone, and I think its cheapish quality for the cost of it. The internet is slow on AT&T, the calls arent clear, sometimes she sounds way more digital & distorted than on any old cell phone.

Yes. For my wife, she wanted all the features of the iPhone (sans the phone), but we didn't really want to sign up with AT&T and given that they do charge for data services, we thought the WiFi for the iPod Touch is a favorable alternative. It's like buying a wireless laptop and hanging out in hotspots so you never need to pay for internet. :)

Now is your wife honestly going to hang out at hotspots? I think the wifi is a cool "added feature" but not the main part of the device.

Why buy something that you can't really afford, meaning internet for it. I wouldn't want to spend energy looking for hotspots all the time to get internet.. hence why I say this is only a small added feature.

I'd just get it to race cars and hold it like a stearing wheel!

You'd be surprised at how many places offer wireless internet access...most libraries, gyms, Starbucks, etc. and at home, we have a wireless router.

I agree about the internet thing, which is why I asked how much data plans are. However, there are free wi-fi spots all over the place here, not to mention around our home too (as if we'll need it with a desktop and laptop), so just in case, it's nice to have something for nothing. A wise investment I'd say.

Anyways, I'd be more interested in using it as a backup GPS (I already have a car GPS device but it's sometimes flaky) like using Google Maps.
