Hello. I have a question regarding the rcmp and obtaining a fingerprint based police clearance. I have read the site a lot so I got an idea, but here is my situation.

My fiance is from Japan, but use to live in Canada for a while before, so she needs a police clearance from them. I was wondering if I can fly her out to Canada to get electronic-based fingerprints, and what that process would be. suck as, what police department she should goto, how would she make a request, If she can just show up at the police station and do it, and, is the eletronic fingerprint service only for canadians? If someone knows this can you please guide me through a process to where i can fly her to canada to do this? we would really appreciate it if you can help us.

and, is the eletronic fingerprint service only for canadians?

Here is the link to the RCMP site.

If she has no criminal record in Canada she will not need the fingerprinting done, just a Canada wide Police Certificate.

Fingerprint results can take 120 days to get according to the site.

When I went to the RCMP for my Police Certificate, I got it in 5 minutes.

how are you sure whether or not you need a fingerprint one because, i read that some places require it even without a criminal record? If she does not need fingerprints, then I don't think i will fly her to canada. but, should i get the fingerprinting one to be safe?

If you are just starting this process and have the extra time- it wouldn't hurt to have the prints done. According to the RCMP site- the prints can be sent from outside of Canada so a trip to Canada will not be needed.

But unless something has changed very recently (and I don't think it has- it would be talked about in the Canada forum) A Canada Wide Police Certificate stating that no record has been found is perfectly acceptable.

When I went, I just walked in and the receptionist handled everything and had my Certificate printed off in no time. I think it was $25 for me- I lived in that community so it was cheaper with me being a resident. I think prices do vary in different detachments.

I know you can get the fingerprint results from outside of Canada so I would also assume you can get Police Certificate this way as well. It might be worth a call to RCMP HQ to find out for sure.

Also- how long did she live in Canada? I assume more that 6 months since she needs a check done?

She WILL require a fingerprint certificate. Allow me to quote my RFE letter:

"The only acceptable police certificate for former residents of Canada is the certificate issued by the RCMP, Ottawa, Ontario. To apply for this certificate, the applicant must go to the nearest police station, present this form letter, show identification, and be fingerprinted. The fingerprints should be marked "VISA ONLY" and forwarded to the Commissioner, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, P.O. Box 8885, Ottawa, Ontario, K1G 3M8, Canada (ATTN: Ident. Control, Civil Section).

A fee of 25 Canadian dollars must accompany each request. The fee must be in the form of a certified check or money order, payable to the Receiver General for Canada."

It didn't apply in our situation, but if you submit the wrong certificate your RFE letter will read the same. This information is confirmed by this document from the DoS website. Police certificate information is on the second page, and you're looking at the third paragraph under 'Canada', which just refers you to the 'Full set of fingerprints required' section of MissStacey's link. :)

If you still live in Canada and have no criminal record you are fine with just the Canada wide name check. If, however, you no longer live in Canada and are requiring a criminal record check, fingerprints are required.

We began trying to start this process a while ago. Her local japanese police said to her that she needed to bring them a form from Canada. She called the Canadian embassy in Japan for the form, but they told her since she is not applying to move to Canada, they will not send her the form. I called an RCMP office and asked them if they can send her the form, but they said she needs to contact the Canadian embassy where she lives for it, and that they cannot mail this form to her. We sent many letters requesting this form, but they are ignoring us

So i was wondering if she can goto Canada for a few days and do it there, and if she can do it electronically.

Wow. What a run-around. I honestly don't see any reason why she shouldn't be able to do that. Is there a Canadian address you can use if they need to be mailed to somewhere in Canada, or perhaps have them sent to you in the US? Good luck.

Good information, CHD, but the link is referring to applicants who are applying for visas in Montreal, which I don't believe is the case in this instance.

It is my understanding that U.S. diplomatic offices reserve the right to request that certain applicants obtain fingerprint-based searches from the RCMP. In other words, a fingerprint-based search may not be applicable in her case. You may want to try contacting The Commissionaires and see what they have to say. I've also heard that the Winnipeg Police is a good outfit to deal with. (nods to Flames9.)

In any event, make sure you retain a copy of all your correspondence in your efforts to follow through with the fingerprint request. You never know when it will come in handy.

Good luck.

Can't she have the fingerprint 10 card done in Japan and then send that to the RCMP? I believe that's what the instructions are saying, and from what I remember of others over the yeas, is what they've done.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

You're right, Reba. It appears she can:

Applicants outside Canada - forward a set of fingerprints certified by the local police authorities and a return address to:

The Commissioner

RCMP

Attention: Identification Services - Civil Section

P O Box 8885

Ottawa, Ontario

Canada KIG 3M8

Thank you for all the advice so far.

Her local police told her that she must bring the form from Canada in order for them to give her her fingerprints. and i called an agency that works with the rcmp for inquiries, and they said she must get that form, and that they do not mail that form out. He told me to call some other guy, and ask him if I can have a carier bring the form to me in the US. I will call him tomorrow when he is in. Its weird because someone else told me they had the same thing, but the canadian embassy gave them the form.

and i was thinking maybe........... that i might just fly her to Japan to get her prints done electronically, cuz it takes 3 days instead of 120. and i know that she can get everything she needs if she goes into a place there. I'm gonna have to get a loan for that though, because if we do that, i will fly there too and meet her. this whole canadian police clearance is throwing us through a loop.

thanks so much for advise guys
