Amen to the feelings in this thread.

I just dumped a big rant on ChloroPhil 's thread on how to make his girlfriend's adjustment period easier ...

After the RNC, I looked at DH and told him, while shellshocked, that I wanted to go home. I feel like I'm on another planet. I had no idea how liberal, pragmatic, and sensible Canadians were until I moved here.

Not only do I miss my family and friends, I miss being surrounded by people who aren't trapped by 'group think' like a flock of floaties swirling around the toilet bowl. It's like the enzyme for independent thought is forcibly atrophied by what they put in the baby formula around here.

Ever seen a bottle blonde with a tramp stamp of the confederate flag? It's like living in a bad cartoon down here. I should have fled off the plane when I sat behind someone who sounded exactly like Boomhauer from King of the Hill, except that he had even less intelligent things to say yet managed to talk about them nonstop for the whole flight. If they had offered alcoholic beverages on that plane, DH would have had to come onto the plane to carry me off as I'd be too drunk to stand.

It was a good post, too, Galateia. And so was this one. Reminds me of how I was feeling a couple of years back.

Thanks.

I've only been here 5 months and I'm already sick of it. This is going to be a long 5-6 years. I thought that moving here would mellow my feelings about the US. Ha. Ha. Ha.

I've grown to dread going to parties because it's going to be the same strained social interaction played out again and again: American says something ignorant, I smile out of Canadian politeness, more stupidity is verbalized my way, I make polite comments, speaker displays evidence that their parentage is from a non-** sapien class, I snap and say the honest answer I have been holding back, letting out something the conversational equivalent of a loud putrid fart in church.

Seriously. If I'm lucky DH's hard of hearing friend is there and we sit in a corner and reflect on how his inability to understand what people are saying is not always a disadvantage.
