Hello all!

My wife (applicant) and I (petitioner) finally received her AOS to permanent residence interview date & time. I am really concerned, however, because I am in medical school and the interview is scheduled for a Wednesday morning during an EXAM!!! YIKES!!! It is virtually impossible to reschedule an exam, unless due to a medical emergency (even this is quite painstaking, as I've witnessed first-hand). Since her AOS is based on our marriage (K1 visa), I definitely need to attend the interview with her yet missing the exam is absolutely out of the question. I called the USCIS National Customer Service Center to see what I could do as far as rescheduling and was told that for this school-related reason, they would not be able to grant an immediate reschedule, and would have to submit a request pending decision. She did say that we would be able to reschedule due to "hospitalization, close relative death, jury duty, school graduation, or not present in the country", which made me think I should just go with one of these reasons and avoid a school-related request that may be denied. Do they request proof of the aforementioned reasons?

If we are able to reschedule, will this dramatically affect the processing time, require some steps to be repeated, and/or affect eligibility for other immigration benefits while her application is pending (as the interview letter states)?

Thank you soooooooo much to anyone who has any input/experience/knowledge of this particular situation!!! Best of luck to everyone!

Its either Medical or AOS so choose one... It could take weeks or months again to get a reschedule for AOS if its even possible.. or if Immigration lets you do it. Try calling your Immigration local office and asking if you can reschedule...what the consequences are if you cant make it to the initial interview... Can only get your answer if you call USCIS at your local office.. duh!!!!

People reschedule for various reasons. It's going to delay her case a bit though and you need to do it far in advance of the interview date.

I wouldn't recommend making up a reason though.

Abby-Ron has the right idea - call the local office immediately and ask if you can reschedule the AOS appointment. If they won't or can't do that over the phone, I would suggest an Infopass appointment at the same office, preferably with both of you going (and take all your paperwork just in case they do the AOS interview then and there - who knows!). I would not take the USCIS helpline as the last word. They have written scripts they follow. Hopefully the local office will be more adjustable - good luck!!

If you try to reschedule your AOS interview appointment, dont be suprized when you get the denial letter in the mail for failing to appear. Others have tried to reschedule in the past and have ended up with a denial of AOS. They will only reschedule in life or death situations.

Do a search here on VJ for denials of AOS and read the posts.
