In Ken's defense, I myself have had a severe negative reaction from something I ate in Colombia's neighboring country Ecuador. I had travelled to Guayaquil, Ecuador for a friend's wedding. It was the 1st time I had ever been there. I was warned by my friend to NOT eat any food from a street vendor because my US Grade A delicate stomach would not like it.

A nice lady selling grapes on the street cut off a few for me to taste. Three days later I was in the hospital in the US with an IV pumping a sugar/saline solution into me.

It was in a coastal town near Guayaquil, whose name escapes me now, where there was another coincidence. While my friend was calling her mom on a public telephone a car drove up w/ tinted windows. A man of about 25 years got out of the car and eyeballed my friend in a way that was truly disrespectful. When I started moving towards him he suddenly realized that my friend was not alone. He got back in the car and the car raced away. My friend told me that the driver and the leering passenger were "narcos" and that we needed to get away from that area as quickly as possible. The area in which we were was NOT a ghetto/slum area but rather a nice tourist area.

That trip was the only trip to Latin America where I have run into anything similar to Ken's experiences.
