You should find out what the laws in your state are about name changes. In some states, if names are not changed at the time of marriage, a court order is needed for a name change.

Another option is for your wife to change her name when she applies for naturalization.

Timeline for Naturalization:

Day 1: Application delivered to AZ

Timeline for Removing Conditions:

Green card received 117 days after application was delivered to USCIS

Timeline for AOS:

Green card received 120 days after application was delivered to USCIS

We were in the same predicament because we got married in Ecuador and my wife couldn't change her name down there for the first round of paperwork. So they told us when we applied for the 751 we can submit a name change request then. We just needed to submit a marriage document with a letter of instruction, then the new green card will come with her married name. Then from there you can change the SSN card and license, etc. The green card is seen as the governing document that even tells SSN what to do. I got all this info from the USCIS call center. I would recommend calling them and seeing if it is too late since you already filed. Suerte!!

Removal of Conditions:

7/1/08 - Removal of Conditions Window opens

7/21/08 - Sent paperwork off to CSC

7/23/08 - Paperwork arrived to CSC per Delivery Confirmation

7/28/08 - NOA received, postmarked 7/25/08. $545 Check cashed today also.

8/6/08 - Biometrics Letter received with an appointment date of 8/22/08

8/22/08 - Biometrics appointment completed

8/25/08 - Case status available online

11/11/08 - Approved!! Received GC in the mail today. They didn't change her last name like we asked, but I could care less right now.

You don't need a court oder to change the last name after marriage. Simply go to the SS office and show them your marriage certificate to change the name in SS card. Then, attach copy of that card with your application as well as write her new name on the application.
