Hi all....

We have just gotten married last week (hehehe) and I have a couple of questions that I need help with:

1. I have decided to take my husband's (the USC) last name. I have not applied for my SSC yet, in fact we have done nothing since I got here 2 months ago. We will go to the SSA to apply for my SSC with my new married name this week and therefore the question is, do I need to notify anyone about my intention of name change or do I need to go through any sort of name change procedure before applying for my SSC?

2. My I-94 will expire on the Sept 14th. I believe that we don't need to file for AOS before that date, right? If so, does anyone know when is the latest we could file for AOS? I am asking this because we're trying to make sure that we have some other important things situated before we proceed on the AOS.

Thanks in advance for your help.....all replies are appreciated!

Cheers.. :star:

Since you don't have an SSN, your application should be in your married name (carry the certified marriage certificate to prove it). You may want to apply for an EAD (work permit) before expiration of your I-94, so yoiu have some official record from USCIS that acknowledges that you have standing with them (i.e., the receipt notice). It would be cheaper to apply for AOS at the same time, but it can wait a month or two.

First of all, congratulations on your marriage!

1. Your SSC application should be in your new last name, but you also need a document providing your immigration status, which I believe is in your maiden name. So... I recommend you to bring a marriage certificate to prove your new name.

2. You can file AOS and EAD as soon as you are married. You don't have to wait till your I-94 expires.

Aaah.. Thank you everyone for your replies and assistance!! My husband and I went to the Social Security Administration office today and successfully applied for my card without any question! :) Yay!

However, I have another question though. The nice lady that assisted with my application has adviced me to notify USCIS with my name change since I am taking my husband's name. She told me to either call them or to go to the USCIS office personally to inform them that I have taken my husband's name since all SSA system is linked to the immigration's. So, the question is, do I need to do that?

And another thing that I would like to confirm... I don't need to file for my AOS before the expiration of my I-94, right? My I-94 is expiring in September but we plan to file for AOS in October or November the latest. I believe that should not be a problem, right?

Thank for all your help... Cheers!!! :star:
