Actually, I won't. Too much work and I am mad lazy.

It is good for you if you are mad lazy.

The fresh tracks on the park greens tell the story. Every day eye witnesses say that a convoy of vehicles - those belonging to US consulate officials and their convoy of guards, make the dash across a public city park to get from there residences to their offices all in the name of security.

One of the city’s most prominent parks, the majestic Bagh-e-Jinnah, has become the passage way for this daily convoy which has no regard for the sanctity of a park. As things stand, Frere Hall has already become a very restricted area for visitors for “security reasons.”

Once a meeting place for families and a home for the weekly book bazaar, today the park is surrounded by a number of menacing policemen and Rangers. They make the stray visitor as uncomfortable as possible. The law enforcers insist that Frere Hall’s grounds are not a public place but rather a high security zone where people cannot roam freely let alone sit down and relax for a few moments.

No buses are allowed to ply on either the Fatima Jinnah Road and Abdullah Haroon Road. Even motorcyclists are not allowed. People have to walk great distances to get to the park and those who have their cars find no place at all to park. one cannot enjoy this national treasure only because of “security reasons.”

“Frere Hall is one of the national heritage places declared by the government,” said Shakeel Ahmed, Advocate of Supreme Court and High Court, adding, “Even a small portion of grass in the park cannot be spoiled, let alone having a road or a passage whether it is for American Consulate General.”

Ahmed said that it is absolutely illogical to spoil a national heritage to facilitate only one person, “it is not in national interest.”

“The status of Frere Hall is more than that of the Parliament House or Habib Bank Plaza as it was formerly the symbol of the city. It was then replaced by Quaid’s tomb,” he elaborated. “Such a respectable place which is truly a public property should not be violated,” he continued.

He told that according to Sindh Public Property Encroachment Act 1975, undue interference in a public property is a violation of the law. He added that a law should be formulated first in case a national heritage is to be used for any purpose other wise any kind of construction will be illegal.

However the facts regarding the construction of a private road through Bagh-e-Jinnah which was carried out earlier this month still remain vague. The work started in the first week of June and it is not yet clear as to why it was felt necessary to allow a pathway for the diplomatic convoy.

While constructing this road, the labourers cut down many tree branches that came in the path of the road. So far, the American Consulate has not commented on this issue. When contacted, the media spokesman of the consulate was not available and the people on his behalf did not speak about the matter saying that only the media spokesman can provide the information.

According to sources, the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) is facilitating the work under the instructions from Ministry of Foreign Affairs but their involvement in the project is only to the extent of executing it. They do not even know the cost of the work and they were just asked to make sure that the work should be completed without any obstacles. The concerned officials could not be contacted to put some light on the purpose of the road and the coordinating officials have no awareness about what was done in Frere Hall.

It may worth mentioning here that the American Consulate which is being favored so much had already stopped issuing visas in Karachi several years back besides this no public facilities are being given to the citizens.

While many citizens have cried foul over this mysterious road for the consulate staff, most of the supposed leading protectors of the city’s built heritage have decided not to comment. When contacted, Amber Allibhai the General Secretary of SHEHRI, an NGO that works for causes related to the built environment, said that she could not comment on the issue because she was unaware of the construction of this pathway.

Despite the fact that this newspaper published a report on this earlier this month, Ms Allibhai said she did not know of this issue. She also avoided further questions by saying that she would only comment when the chairman of the NGO was back in the city.

Imran-Qazi

I am sorry to say this but Imran Khan’s role in politics is very disappointing and heart-breaking. I think that’s the main reason he cannot muster support for his party. He is very critical about issues, and tends to be very pessimistic. A leader should give hope to the masses but instead he spreads negativity.

Also, Mr Khan has the habit of stinging those who help him. In cricket he stung Javed Miandad and was always critical of him, though everybody knows that without Miandad he could not achieve the fame that he has today as a cricketer. He certainly could not win the world cup without Miandad.

Similarly, Gen. Musharraf supported Imran Khan politically when Nawaz Sharif was against him. There was a time in Mr Sharif’s era when even pictures of Imran Khan holding the cricket world cup were banned on PTV. Musharraf also supported Shaukat Khanum Hospital with his own money and helped to set up more medical units in Lahore at the government level. The government even gave Mr Khan land for a hospital in Karachi.

Having seen some positive things in him, Gen Musharraf also offered to make him the prime minister of Pakistan. Refusing the offer was his own decision but he should show some respect for the president rather than going against him.

Though everybody knows that Gen. Musharraf is much better than Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, by going against him Imran Khan is showing his priorities and ‘biting his helper’s hand’. I request Imran Khan to please leave politics and instead help the country by making as many cancer hospitals as he can.

Man is a wonderful creature; he sees through the layers of fat (eyes), hears through a bone (ears) and speaks through a lump of flesh (tongue).

KARACHI: Long spells of load-shedding and prolonged power breakdowns continued in almost every locality of the metropolis for the second consecutive day on Friday, causing hardship to residents during the prevailing hot and dry weather.

Residents had to pass a sleepless night in between Thursday and Friday, as power played hide-and-seek in their areas. While load-shedding for three to four hours continued in a number of city areas from dawn to dusk. However, a KESC spokesman maintained that due to current hot weather the demand of electricity in the metropolis has increased and it touched 2200 megawatts during the peak hours.

He said that the KESC was getting only 1900 megawatts electricity from all available resources and it had no other option except to carry-out load-shedding to meet the shortage of 300 mw.

A resident of Gulshan-e-Maymar said that his area experienced a three-hour long power failure in the afternoon. He said that the KESC complaint centre phone numbers remained busy, making it impossible for him to lodge his complaint. He alleged that the duty staff deliberately engaged their telephones to avoid people’s complaints.

Another resident of Malir Cantt said that power supply broke down in his area at about 10am and took about three hours to restore.

Also, a consumer from Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 7 said that his locality remained without power for over three hours in the day.

Another consumer from Nazimabad Block 3 said that his area experienced three breakdowns for one hour each during the last night and again in the day power supply broke down and restored after two hours.

Many city areas plunged into darkness after the sunset and there was a blackout like situation in the affected areas. Traffic cops were seen controlling vehicular traffic manually, as due to the power failures, traffic signals stopped functioning.
