Hi There

I wonder if any one could advise me what to do next.

I arrived on a K1 visa and we married soon after, Today we went to the Social Security Administration to apply for my SSN card.

They could only issue it in my single name and said I have to advise USCIS that I have married in order for the card to be in my married name. Can you advise if this is correct or what I need to do, for instance is there a form to advise the USCIS that we are now married.

I was also told I had to tell USCIS that we were married. but I never heard that before. I thought being on a K-1 was enough said that that's what happens on a K-1. I am unsure if this is true.

May 27th, 2008 -- Damian moves to America!

July 23rd - 30th, 2008 -- Damian's Mum Comes to the US for our wedding.

July 25th, 2008 -- Wedding Day!

March 16th, 2009 -- AOS Sent

May 8th, 2009 -- EAD & AP Approved (51days)

July 14th, 2009 -- AOS Approved!! (118days)

July 21st, 2009 -- Green Card Received (125days)

No RFEs the whole process :) All done myself.

December 4th - 30th, 2009 -- Visited England

April 8th - 30th, 2010 -- Damian's Brother visits us here in PA.

January 19th, 2010 -- Damian got his PA license.

December 10th - 19th, 2010 -- Visited England

September 16th - 30th, 2011 -- Damian's Parents came to visit us here in PA.

June 1st, 2011 -- Mailed ROC to Vermont.

February 21st, 2012 -- 10 Year Green Card Received

April 14th, 2012 -- N-400 Sent to Dallas Lockbox

November 26th, 2012 – Damian Became a US Citizen!!!

We got Marlene's SSN with her married name based on her K1 and our marriage certificate.

05/16/2005 I-129F Sent

07/18/2005 Consulate Received package from NVC

11/09/2005 Medical

11/16/2005 Interview APPROVED

12/05/2005 Visa received

12/07/2005 POE Minneapolis

01/14/2005 SSN received in the mail

02/03/2006 AOS sent (Did not apply for EAD or AP)

02/09/2006 NOA

02/16/2006 Case status Online

Did you bring your marriage certificate? You might try that. A few other notations I'll make is that you must have at least 76 days left on your visa for them to issue a card, and another is that you could get her SS card in her maiden name for now, it'll be the same number when she has it changed to her married name if you can't get one with her married name. SS sometimes doesn't understand their own rules. I know some people who have googled and found what they need to bring to have a name change, printed that off and taken it to the office, OR, some people have gone to another office even!

Hope you can straighten this out. This might be better answered in the AOS forum, or Moving to America, than here in the Canada forum.

False. A K1 should apply for SSN within 76 days of entry and must have at least 14 days remaining on the I-94.

Thanks for your replies, I think the best thing to do is wait till it comes in my single name and then see if I can get a name change.

I took my marriage certificate with me yesterday so we will have to see.
