Poll: Working-class divided on impact of illegal immigration

A new poll shows that working-class Americans are divided right down the middle about the impact of illegal immigrants on their job prospects.

The poll, conducted for the Washington Post, the Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University, found that 49 percent of Americans earning $27,000 a year and less say that illegal immigrants "generally take jobs away from legal residents."

Americans were divided along racial lines. Working-class blacks and whites were more than twice as likely as working-class Hispanics to feel that illegal workers were a threat to their livelihoods.

According to the poll, 57 percent of African Americans and Caucasians said that illegal immigrants take jobs from legal residents, while just 26 percent of Latinos held that view.

The poll surveyed 1,350 workers earning $27,000 per year and less because they represent about 40 percent of the workforce and are seen as most vulnerable to low-wage competition.

To reach the maximum number of workers, interviews were conducted in English and Spanish both on land lines and mobile phones.

To all the people who think illegal immigrants are not taking our jobs,I have some very interesting reading material.

http://www.projo.com/news/stategovernment/...54.3e8394a.html

You mean to all those people that think that companies are not giving ['our'] jobs to illegals.

Besides, to make a job 'ours' we first have to have it... and to my knowledge, I wonder how many lawsuits would arise if [literally] our jobs were actually given to others, let alone illegals.

Ooops, let me rephrase that.Jobs that American citizens are willing to do.Sorry about that.

;)

And therein lies a much smaller number I presume...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

That's nice and all but it somehow doesn't seem to represent the actual population of illegals. At that rate of pay, if it were representative, ICE raids would most likely be focused in very nice neighborhoods. Plus I am sure in that person you know most of that $1000 a week isn't exactly from an hourly wage but rather from tips.

Which brings me to the original premise... its not about blaming the illegals but focusing on those that profit from the illegals working for them.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

All I know is that I would love to work under the table and make $1000 a week.

working for $700 a week without any taxes isn't bad at all either.
