Fear is killing the American Spirit and turning us all into paranoid pansies.

Not in my case. While I was in Barranquilla a few weeks ago, I helped corner a thief in the restaurant I was eating at. If I was paranoid, I wouldn't have even gone to Colombia in the first place. I'd be too afraid to leave the USA. Too afraid to leave my house! I'd be hunkered down, watching Fox News or something...

As for public transportation, ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

People react to fear in different ways. We'd do ourselves a tremendous favor if we'd recognize that fear for what it is instead of giving it rationale and reason. Fear is probably one of the worst social diseases there is.

Dare I mentioned the big furore over child s*x offenders at this point. Listening to people talk about this - you would be forgiven for imagining that there are stunty little Nosferatu men lying in wait to snatch children as soon as they step off the garden path.

Same principle more or less. All rooted in a deep-seated fear of becoming a victim of violent crime when the statistical likelihood is generally pretty low.

I read this article this morning. What a horrible way to die. I took the greyhound countless times to visit my now husband when I was still in Canada. And I always took it through the night. Usually I would start out around 7 or 8pm and end up in NYC at 5 or 6am.

But now that I think about it, there were all kinds of strange people on the bus. Actually, one particular time they would not let a man board WITH a knife in his pocket. But after he gave up the knife, they let him board the bus any way. He was really scary looking/acting. This was from NYC to Montreal. There were even countless ppl each trip who never made it across the border into the US and I know all of them weren't Visa issues. Pretty scary.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Why this crime appears to have generated more response than the average stabbing is the beheading. That is completely grotesque, but the guy isn't any more dead than any other stabbing victim.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Hmmm...guess we shouldn't bother with seatbelts, for the same reason.

Primarily the beheading, yes, but also the pure randomness of being murdered while sleeping by a complete stranger.

Not really the same - but ok... Though if the implication here is to compare carrying knives and guns to wearing seatbelts that seems pretty wonky to me.

Seat belts? Huh? Seat belts are proven to save 1,000's of lives, I don't really think there is any direct comparison to be made with sensible accident prevention measures and irrational fear responses.

Reasonable precautions are just what they imply.

The likelihood of being in an accident is generally pretty low also, yet we have measures to protect ourselves in that situation.

One thing that is interesting is how the effect that the news media has on public perceptions of crime. There have been some studies that suggest that coverage of murders and violent crime leads people to believe that there is more of it about than there actually is.

Its not really all that surprising - crime statistics are easily available, and not surprisingly the most extreme crimes tend towards a very lowest percentage of committed crime, but are by contrast the most widely reported.

Nothing surprising about this - but I think it does have a psychological impact on peoples perception of how safe society actually is.
