maiden name question

Hi there, one quick question regarding AOS and married name/ maiden name:

on form I-485 they ask for last name, given name, middle name - what is in fact my middle name now? My husband says that in the US, the maiden name automatically becomes the middle name, and any previous middle names simply disappear.

Is that right? How am I supposed to fill out the forms for AOS in regards to that question??

Yes your husband is right. Your maiden becomes your middle name and hislast name will become your last name.

That is certainly not the norm for the US in general. Here in NY, they ask on the marriage license application what name you are going to be using for your married name. You could choose to keep your name as it is prior to marriage, take your husbands last name and leave everything else (first and middle) the same, or something else like hyphenate. But there is no automatic about it. Now this may vary by state, and this information may very well be correct for your state of residence.

I have heard of women taking their maiden names as their middle name, but it is not ALWAYS the case. You can specify and do it which ever way you prefer. In TN your maiden name does NOT become your middle name automatically.... Unless you specified, your middle name was your original middle name.
