OK, so when I get out there, there's the inevitable search for work. My background is in security management, but I have a U.S. college degree (albeit only an AAS) in an I.T. related field, and intend to get my A+ certification whilst waiting for my green card. I am 37 years old with, hitherto, no work experience in the I.T. field.

So what do you reckon? Stick with security management, or try and get into I.T.?

This is not the best time to break into IT, IMO..... but if you know people that could make all the difference.

Also, there is a glut of A+'s out there. It's not exactly considered a highly-skilled specialty anymore.

Not worth spending a few $$$$ on then right about now? Mmmmmm, food for thought.......

Security management as in what? How high up in an organization are we talking? Goverment?

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

If you know someone who can get you hired, then it might be.

A+ is pretty useless. But there are certifications that can be very helpful, like the upper level Cisco certifications.

With only an AA degree, the only way your going to get into a good company is if you know someone.

No matter what field you end up in you have to remember that you will most likely start at the very bottom. So you can get an entry level position in IT while you get other certifications you might need. Once you get them, you will have some IT related experience under your belt.

A good way to find out where you stand or what your possibilites may be is to contact a local employment agency like TekSystems or Tekmark who specialize in tech related jobs.

Government!!?? Oh good lord, no!

I'm a service manager for a very large, multi-national Facilities Management company, my branch of which has the contract to provide a full FM service for the brand new hospitals (both mental health and acute) in Birmingham. Security is one of the services we provide, and I look after it.

I'm wondering if my experience of working in a healthcare environment might be useful; life in a mental health facility is, well, quite an experience!
