Hi. I was reading a sort of similar topic on the board a moment ago and it occured to me that my fiance' and I may be in sorta the same boat -- my fiance' and I met in Oct 2004 while I was studying abroad in Italy. We met through mutual friends, hit it off, etc. but we were dating casually because, you know, I NEVER in a MILLION YEARS expected to fall in love with him and want to marry him. But he was my constant companion for all those weeks and by the end of my stay, we decided it might be nice if he could come visit me in NY that spring (May 2005). So, he applied for a visitors visa and got... DENIED. Of course, now we both know how naive it was of us to think he had a chance in hell at getting that visa. But anyway, I'm not concerned that he applied and got turned down, since I went to visit him that May instead. What worries me is that on the B-1 visa application, he wrote that he wanted to visit me, his FRIEND. I'm worried because we didn't write girlfriend. I guess at the time I technically WAS his g/f, but our relationship got MUCH more serious after I left and we realized how much we really do love/need each other and what a big 'ol vacant hole we have in our lives without each other ( :( ). Do you think we'll run into any trouble with the K-1 interview since he didn't write "girlfriend" on the visitor visa application?

Since then, Ive gone back to visit him twice, we have loads of pictures, phone bills going back a year and a half showing that we maintain contact, e-mails, written letters, etc. He DID meet my mom during those first months together and my parents are co-sponsoring him. If he were to just explain that, at the time, given the distance that was soon to be between us, we were reluctant to consider each other serious b/f-g/f since we didn't think we'd be able to maintain our relationship, do you think the consular officer will understand, or will they be all "LYING SCUM!!! DENIED! Get out of the consulate!!" ?

Karen, I would say, dont worry, at the time he applied for B2 you were his friend, not fiancee, i think you wont have any problems. I also applied about an year ago for B2 to visit my boyfriend in USA and got denied. I did not even mention on the form that i am going to visit a friend, for purpose of the trip i wrote- tourism. I was also naiv to think i would get the visa. Please, anyone, correct me if i am wrong.

WHEW! Thanks! I feel better now -- I was so scared they'd accuse him of lying on the tourist visa application or something because he didn't call me his g/f on it. :)

It's quite possible to drive yourself around the bend worrying about whether you dotted all the i's and crossed the t's, but really you don't have to worry! You WERE his 'friend' back then... it's a natural progression to girlfriend/fiance/wife! And I very much doubt that they'll be bothering to dig up his previous applications anyway because they're not terribly relevant now. Lots of people apply for tourist visas and get denied and then apply for a fiance visa later on. They don't expect you to have a timemachine to know that you're going to decide to do something more serious about the relationship 12 months later :)
