Should all renters, including the US born, be required to obtain occupancy license in order to rent?

Smart idea.. I am sure the ACLU will find something to dispute it and effectively reward criminal behavior

Is it fair to ask USC renters to pay $5 for a license each time they move, to address a problem created by a coalition of big business and big government which was all too willing to "look the other way"?

how often do people move?

I know lots of college kids who rent off campus who move at least once a year, sometimes more, if it doesn't "work out". I live in a college town so I see that a lot.

But more importantly, as a matter of principle - shouldn't the cost for the licenses be borne by those who created the problem?

so you expect the illegals only to pay the license fee?

Primary culpability for the problem lies with the federal government and big business - they should pay for it.

If the state pays for anyone who cannot afford it. Are you still up for it?

If the state pays for everyone, I'd be up for it. The money can be raised through local businesses.

Businesses did not create the problem. The responsibility to secure a nation's borders and look out for its citizens falls solely on the Federal government's shoulders.

Businesses have a legal obligation to not hire illegals. Yet, they knowingly do.

Are you saying we have a deadbeat federal government?

Because if you are, I'd agree with you!

It won't hurt me but I am sure there are those who can't afford it. I don't know anyone like that, but then again I don't really know any really poor people either. Yet, I am assured they exist and I believe it.

What is it actually going to do? There are already landlords who don't play by the rules. Without solid enforcement, they will still keep renting to people with or without a licence.

Are there going to be checks on people rooming with other people?

Are you talking about the president alone or the president as well as the US congress. Officials elected by the people who ironically fail to deliver anything meaningful to the people they are elected to represent. Winning Latino votes, the majority of illegal immigrants, seems to be a priority on their list rather than actually looking out for America.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Are you saying even the poorest American has $5 to spare?

I honestly don't know if that's the case. Like I said, I don't know people that poor.

But again, just speaking to the principle - why should poor USC's bear the cost of resolving a problem they did not create?

For some people every dollar counts, but in those cases, they either live with someone else, or get government assistance to pay rent.
