Are you talking about traditional or religious wedding? Religious ceremony can be "official" in Malaysia depends which religion you are talking about, some clergy staffs can do marriage registration.

Fiance visa seems to be going a little faster than spousal visa right now.

The 4th option: Apply for a fiance visa. When it gets approved, have a traditional wedding in Malaysia(if it's important to her and her family) before you bring her back to America to have the official marriage registration and another wedding?

This is the option I was hoping to use. If after the visa is approved and a traditional marriage is completed without any paperwork how would the officer at the POE know if the couple is coming as fiancee or married? I hope someone on here can answer this.

They won't know until you show your occasion's pictures. I do not think it's a big deal ;) Although you should be careful with this matter. It varies from different countries. As to where I live, ceremony won't be considered legal until it is brought up to religious affair department where paperwork is signed.

Pictures, wedding rings or references to husband or wife are killers. Otherwise, if you present yourselves as engaged, since legally that's what you better be, no problem.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

Hey there,

We was in the same exact situation 2 years ago.

Our route was K1----Married in US----Go back to Malaysia for relegious ceremony (see our timeline :) )

1. Apply for K1 Visa. Entered US as Fiancee

2. Married in US. By law and and small relegious (akad nikah) ceremony in LA.

3. Adjust Status (AOS)

4. Went back to Malaysia for another relegious ceremony. (bersanding/kenduri only)

I would love to do the relegious ceremony in Malaysia first but that will not help with K1 visa. (at that time K1 is faster than spousal Visa) but they (Pejabat Agama people) want us to get permission from US embassy in KL for my hubby (the USC) to marry me. So we have to opt out that option because if we do that, than they will cancel our K1 visa petition. ( We thought we can do the "akad nikah" without having to deal with US embassy). A month after we filed the petition, they actually add one more requirement which is to ask permission from US embassy. I think they forgot to mention that to us previously when I went to Pejabat Agama. We could always canceled our K1 and proceed with K3 and wedding, but decided not to do that. We already been so stressed out with the paperworks.

So, we postponed the "kenduri" until I got my AOS ( which I got before AP the travel document ).

As soon as I got my GC, we travelled back and had regular wedding ceremony for my side of family and relative. It is actually pretty funny because we already husband and wife when we went to choose our wedding dress and gifts, but it was also a priceless moment. :)
