On our first trip to Savannah Joel and I stayed at the Forsyth Park Inn. It has a direct tie to the B&B I stayed in when I went to Nova Scotia the first time...Churchill Mansion. The man who owned Churchill Mansion owned the house in Savannah - Forsyth Park Inn. Both are reputed to be haunted. :D Anywho, FPI is a marvelous house...well worth the money we spent.

Marshall House is haunted too. I would have loved to take one of those ghost tours they offer at night!! We will definitely go back there on day.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that little bit of information. Fall is great too, but all those travellers who come to the mountains to see the leaves turning can create a traffic snarl too. But it's so much cooler in the fall. Haven't been in the spring...might have to do that sometime.

Hi all. Me and my fiance are looking into a few places for our honeymoon. So far we have narrowed it down to the Great Smoky Mountains and Savannah.

We fancy either Asheville or Gatlinburg, probably a log cabin or downtown Savannah. Can anyone recommend on these places? I looked at the hotels in Savannah and $hit is it expensive. Good hotels seem to be around $200 per night.

Cheers, feedback would be appreciated.

Sounds really nice. I hope you have fun and post some pictures when you come back.

I'd pick Gatlinburg. I've never been to Asheville but I have been to Savannah and Gatlinburg. Haven't been to Savannah since I was a kid so I thought it was very boring, so did my parents, but maybe we wanted more kid things to do and it was in the 90's so there's probably even more there now. But I think Gatlinburg is beautiful and magical. :P But do try to avoid the busiest time of the year.

I've never been to Savannah but I am familiar with Gatlinburg. The down-side is that it is a trashy touristy place. But if you like shopping, Pigeon Forge which is on the way is great with many outlet malls. Traffic though is bumper to bumper. it's because Dollywood is at Pigeon Forge.

Ashville on the other hand is my preferred destination. It is one of those smaller-size cities with a vibrant downtown and great restaurants and a Europeon atmosphere. Biltmore also is an added

attraction. A few minutes drive away from Ashville is also Cherokee where there is a casino nestled in the mountains.

I've been to all three places and I'd pick Savannah over the other two. Of course, I live about an hour and a half from Asheville so it's just not a big "let's go there" place for me. We go to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg a lot because it's so close to us also. It's really nice but doesn't even compare to Savannah in my opinion.

BTW, cars generally get better traction with more weight in them. I live in an area with lots of steep terrain and gravel roads. Anytime we get stuck we pile the weight on to get out. Me thinks someone might have been a little rude in asking the "fat" girl to get out and walk. Or maybe they needed a car with a little more muscle.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

We did a cabin near Gatlinburg - http://www.bearlyrustic.com/ is the company we used and my parents have used for years. The prices are very reasonable in my opinion. It was beautiful but there wasn't a ton to do nearby and Gatlinburg was a bit of a drive (maybe an hour? I can't remember) away. Each cabin is in a different area and I believe are privately owned and just rented out through this company so some may be closer to Gatlinburg. The area is gorgeous though. Asheville is also really beautiful but it has been years since I've visited.

Asheville is lovely. My family has a house in Highlands, NC and we went there every summer for years. It's close to Asheville. Maybe you could check it out? It's one of the most beautiful towns and if you're into the mountains and hiking and all, then perhaps it's worth a look?

Here's the link to the town: http://highlandsinfo.com/ I would recommend the Old Edwards Inn and Spa. We never stayed there (since we have a house) but we had some family friends who did. They just finished a renovation and I'm sure it's better now. Ahh, makes me miss it! I haven't been there since 1998....

I went to Gatlinburg once and we had fun. I think I got really drunk and slept with some wacko. Don't do that on your honeymoon! I remember it being pretty though. Oh wait  I remember now. Ok so this really overweight girl was with us and the car wouldn't make it up the hill from the house we were staying in (super steep gravel hill with no room for getting any speed before going up it). So my mom made her get out of the car and walk up the hill so we would make it up the hill  omg that was so funny.

eta: the car made it up the hill just fine without her in it

Are you serious? That's really awful. I mean, that's not even funny at all, that's just cruel that your mother did that  How old was this girl?
