Heh. Reading this thread is so fun! My husband just can't get Tagalog right, though he so wants to learn. The words he can remember are, of course, the "bad" ones. P.I. was the first.

He actually got a phrasebook, which I don't think works that well... When he's in the mood, we have a Tagalog swapping thing in bed before we go to sleep. He usually starts with the "Sa-an po ang kubeta?" :D

Actually, the office we file at is in Cleveland, we live about 40 minutes' drive away. But it's close enough! :) And yes, favorite niya iyan. Naniniguro lang siguro, so that if he needs it, he'll at least know how to ask for one! Hehe.

Aside from the usual kumusta ka, mabuti and mahal kita, I think my husband was a lot faster learning the following two Filipino words (1 in Ilocano - Northern Phils dialect). Not sure why but makes me laugh everytime he says it especially in not so applicable situations.

sungit (Tagalog/Ilocano) - means grumpy (which is most applicable for me sometimes ;-)

dugyot (Ilocano) - messy, untidy, cluttered (I usually tell him this everytime he leaves the bathroom sink with his shaving residues ;-)

Hehe. I just remembered one word my husband will never forget - tampo. Is there any real translation to this?? We haven't come up with one, but he definitely knows what it means now.

Here is what I've been using to learn Tagalog. It doesn't teach the spelling, but it teaches you how to say the words correctly because it uses native speakers of the language:

Pimsleur Lanuage Programs: Tagalog (I use the most expensive one because it has additional courses - 32 courses, 30 minutes each so that's 16 hours of Tagalog). If you're interested in this one, there's a person on eBay who sells them really cheap compared to the stores. Let me know if you're interested and I can give you his username. I've bought 1 Tagalog and 2 Spanish courses from him so I haven't had any problems so I doubt you would either.

You can help your husband with the spelling. I use this in combination with the Rosetta Stone, but the Rosetta Stone is only good at building vocabulary, not for conversation. Using them together helps a lot!
