Yes, the winner's country gets to host the following year. Sure this is a rather expensive proposition, but the tourist dollars can be quite an infusion for the economy. With regard to Ukraine, it helped open the country to more European visitors.

I have to admit, some of the performers are really silly or just plain bad. I think those are the ones looking for the strange or weird voters. But, there is nothing like the live performance. The acts come so quick you barely have time to breathe before another in on.

The web site is pretty good for looking at the performers before the contest finals. But, ultimately it comes down to who stays up to vote and what does the European telephone voter like. If you want to see what I mean, check out the second place winner from last year, Verka Serduchka from Ukraine.

Eurovision is such a joke. The songs are always turgid and bad.

Hell we even had Samantha Janus compete one year - in the hope that eye candy would make up for the appalling songwriting.

I actually remember the words to the Samantha Janus entry - that was 10-15 years ago now... She sang "message to your heart". I don't know why I remember that - the song was appalling.
