Question

In you opinions/experiences has the fact that someone's fiance' doesn't speak English negatively influence whether or not they get the K-1? I'm asking this assuming it's obvious that the couple talks frequently/sends written correspondence and it's clear they can communicate very well in another language.

I ask because of that question of the DS 230 number 23 "Languages spoken or read" and I'm concerned because my fiance' doesn't speak English (though of course, he intends to learn asap) and I'm wondering why they'd even ask if it didn't matter one way or another.

The consulate's only concern, is that you have a language that you both have in common so you can communicate... Yacine doesn't speak English well either, but he's working on it, we speak french together. It will not effect his interview.. However, you need to show emails and correspondance that coincides with the language you speak together... Hope this helps and good luck

I actually think they want to know this because in many countries there is more than 1 language the people speak and so the day of the interview she would get someone who speaks the same language as him/her. Also to know if this is a real relationship because if both of you dont speak a common language then they may wonder how you two comminicate.

My fiancee spoke very little English and I spoke even less Spanish when we met - And she did her interview in Bogota in Spanish - she called me 10 minutes later and said; "It was very easy!" So! At least in Bogota they didn't care how well we communicate (her written communications were better than her spoken communication.) Good Luck
