Hi I finally got my EAC today in the mail!!!!!! Cna anyone tell me how to apply for a SS#? They told me I have to go to their office and bring my EAC. What kind of document do you have to show thme? Do they ask for the birth certificate? And for the marriage license?

Because I used to have 2 copies of my birth certificate and 2 copies of the official english translation. The problem is that I gave a copy of the bc and the translation to Immigration for the AOS but now I only have the italian copy of the birth certificate and I cannot find the translation anymore! I don't know where it is. So I will have to translate the entire document again and that sucks because we don't have the money (it costs like 70 bucks!). Regarding our marriage license, Naples Consulate took the original copy and it kept it and we asked Bell County, TX for a new copy but they sent us a certified copy and not an original one. Its like a fotocopy with their stamo behind, that certifies that the copy is good. Do you think that might work?

Thanks in advance

I have another question: once I apply and then I receive the SS do I need to apply for a new SS after I get the Green Card or this SS will be valid, let's say forever?

since you got your EAD you will i think receive a ssc with no restrictions about working so if that is correct then that is the only one you will need yes, if it has a restriction for work then you should replace it for one with no restrictions once you get your green card

congrats on your EAD

If your EAD card has the name you want on the SSN card, that plus your birth certificate would normally be enough. Now you can go at this one of two ways, one say you don't have your birth certificate and they probably can use your passport or you can use the birth certificate you have and SSA will have it translated if they think it needs to be and it doesn't cost you anything. I don't think you will need the marriage certificate if your EAD card has your married name, but if what you have is a copy issued by the government agency that married you with their seal you probably are OK.

RM 00203.001 Evidence Required for an SSN Card

C. POLICY - EVIDENCE FOR AN ORIGINAL OR NEW SSN

1. Work Authorized SSN Card

An alien allowed to work must provide evidence establishing age, identity and work authorized lawful alien status.

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203020

RM 00203.020 Number of Documents Required for an SSN Card

2. Original (and new SSNs)

At least two documents are required and should be requested

b. Aliens

A foreign born individual should always be requested to submit a foreign birth certificate if one is in his/her possession or if one can be easily obtained. However, if a foreign birth certificate does not exist or cannot be obtained, accept alternative evidence of age. See RM 00203.110G.

For an original or new SSN request, an alien applicant must present at least two documents to establish the three factors of age, identity, and lawful alien status/current authority to work (see RM 00203.020). If the immigration document (i.e., a document issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) (or the former U.S. immigration authority, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)) is used to establish alien status and age (RM 00203.020), then the alien must provide another document, such as a passport or driver's license, to establish identity. When a document other than the immigration document is used to establish age, then the immigration document can be used to establish alien status and identity.

H. . Procedure – Foreign-Born Applicant Applies for an Original SSN Card or to Change the DOB on the Numident Record

1. If a foreign-born person has the foreign BC in his/her possession or can readily obtain (i.e, within 10 business days) a properly certified copy, ask him/her to submit it. Be aware that if the person is foreign-born, a BC may not exist, may not have been recorded shortly after birth, or the probative value of the document may not be high. See GN 00307.140 and GN 00307.145. In these situations, accept alternative evidence of age in order of probative value. The alternative evidence of age may be less than a year old (e.g., a U.S. immigration document). If the foreign BC is in a foreign language, follow the instructions in RM 00203.040B.3. to determine whether to ask for the foreign BC and whether to have it translated.

Damn you know what you're talking about! lol: I called them yesterday after the post and they told me that my marriage certificate is fine, even if its a certified copy from Bell County, as long as it has the seal on the back. And about my birth certificate, they say I only need the Italian copy (which I have) they don't need they translation. They can do it, the woman said.

Is the process to apply for the SS# free or you have to pay some kind of fee?

Thanks!!!!!!

Weren't you just a few days ago thinking about abandoning your AOS and go back to Italy without AP to help your moribund mom?
