Student Aid Question

Thanks so much for your input everyone!!!

My daughter will be able to get loans herself (without a co-signer) as soon as she is a graduate student (after her bachelor's degree which she is still working on). So, we have about another 2 years where we will need to find ways to pay whatever is left after the student aid she is given.

She was given a subsidized Stafford loan for $4,500, but that's it. Her tuition/expenses etc. are estimated to be around $16,000 per year. My husband and I will pay for her books, and her Dad (in Canada) will also contribute some, but there will still be a lot left to pay.

We have already done the FAFSA and that's how they have calculated what aid she is eligible for. And since she is not a grad student, she can't get loans herself.

The 3 universities she applied to are state universities, not private universities.

I guess we're going to have to make the long drive to the top university on her list to see what they can offer (if anything) to help with the overage.

Any other comments would be greatly appreciated.

she can apply for something called a signature student loan, thats what i did...i used sallie mae, but im sure there are other providers out there too...this is the student equivalent to the parent plus loans, and yes, an undergraduate can get these loans as well...she can apply without a cosigner, but her interest rate will be lower if she chooses to apply with one (thats what i did)...my undergraduate education was funded through grants, stafford loans, part time work, and these loans

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH for all the good advice from everyone.

I have some reading and research to do, and hopefully, I can come up with some way to get through this. I would be very disappointed if my daughter couldn't continue on with her education at this point, after putting in 2 years at the local community college here where we live, with a 3.75 GPA.

She's a very good student, and a hard worker, and she wants to go off to Dental school after getting her BA. I know you can get all kinds of loans for Dental school, so I'm not worried about that.

We just need to get her through the next 2 years until she has her Bachelors degree.
