I don't know if this link has been posted before, but I've only just learned of it and it looks really good.

I can't vouch for the organization, but you can check it out yourself and decide if you think it is reputable. It allows you to choose an entrepreneur from a developing country and lend as little as $25 to him/her to start or expand a business.

The link is www.kiva.org.

Here's a little that I found about them:

WideAwake's Verdict? NOT A SCAM. I'm an idiot though, so don't blame me if you get ripped off.

I read(either in the NYTimes or WSJ) that the reaction on the part of donors/investors has been so overwhelming that there is actually a shortage of businesses to invest in!!! I went to the site and was hoping I could invest in a Nepali business but all the ones on the site were already funded.

That's interesting. It seems like there wouldn't be a shortage of people wanting a loan! Maybe these guys break some legs if they aren't paid back and word got out!

They do have a disclaimer regarding risk though:

I haven't researched this 'company'. However, if it were me considering it, caution flags would already be waving just from what you described.

I know micro lending can be a very good thing, given the right rules and oversight. It can also be a administered in such a way that it is not beneficial at all.

The success stories I'm aware of are in cultures where women are typically oppressed and the loans are only given to women who can and will prevent men from 'appropriating' the money.

I have several Kiva "loans" going and I get these emails when the women involved make payments. There was a time when they got a huge amount of donors that they ran out of companies. But lately they haven't had that problem. You can go to their site and browse for a person that appeals to you . I haven't had any trouble yet with the people defaulting.

That concurs with what I've read. When the micro-loans are limited to women in cultures where women are oppressed, they are successful and repay the loans.

They also have men seeking loans. I just haven't made a loan to one yet. You can check out the local lending group and find the default rates. Some of them have taken t o making "group" loans and making them jointly and severaly liable.
