Frances, while there Sujeet did all the bargaining for me, there's no way I would do it unless I was there for a long timeand got used to it.

You were in Delhi, right? Even I can not bargain in Delhi... they're like vultures over there!

Yep

We also were in Agra but we didn't go to any shops there...too crazy of a city for me. We either were at the Taj Mahal or in the hotel(were there just 2 nights), and ate mostly in the hotel too. I didn't go walking around there. Only once my dad and Sujeet walked to a Pizza hut down the street while I stayed back at the hotel, to get us some food. I didn't feel like getting followed by people trying to sell things the whole way, so I happily let them go without me. The hotel was very safe so I didn't feel nervous about that.

People in Agra are way nicer than in Delhi. It's more of a typical north Indian city, Delhi is way too planned out (unless you count old delhi/chandni chowk). So it looks more chaotic but people will be nicer. My biased opinion, people* in Delhi are the worst.

Edit: *By "people" i mean people who try to sell you stuff :P

ok :P

I couldn't tell which people were nicer. We stayed in a tiny motel guestroom place in New Delhi, and everyone there was nice. It was actually a Bengali neighborhood near Kalkaji(where Sujeet lived). Not a tourist area so that was kind of cool.

[*]I bought a cheap pair of really cute pink flip flops which make my feet cute....that's a REAL "feat" (arrf!), cuz I don't think my feet are cute and a bright pink and orange head band...it RAWKS! It's the little things sometimes that can make me smile.

I just wanted to go back to this and say that is so funny! It's true tho,the little things can be great!!

You're nice??

Nahhh just kidding!! :D

Hey except, when we left to go to Agra my dad left his passport, and wallet at the guesthouse. DOHHHH!! 35 mins after leaving and near the edge of New Delhi, my dad figures it out, so we had to turn around and go back. Sujeet called the place, and told them and they said yes they found it and would keep it aside for him safely. Of course when we got back, my dad found $20 missing. Sujeet mentioned to the owner but my dad just let it go. Silly dad leaving his money behind. We did go back to that same place after Agra. :hehe: Sujeet could only half way communicate with the employees there since they spoke a different language and they had to communicate through some 3rd language. Now that I think about it, what was Sujeet thinking with us staying in that place???

Well, if it makes you feel any better, consider this. The cost of that item you didn't really want will probably be quite low by USD standards. But since you're an American tourist, even that low price is after a huge markup. Thanks to you, the shop owners kids will probably have goat that night :)

Oh, I'[m not naive enough to belive the locals won't pay a price that is a tiny fraction of what I will pay, but I DO also know that the exchange rate is pretty dang good...and good for the shop owner's kids....I don't mind them having goat off my dollars...hehehe.

Really happy for you FRANCES!! IT"s been a great week,

INDIA is beautiful even with all the craziness that goes on. I've been to several parts of INDIA. some little hints and tricks can go a long way.

If i am in the store and i see something I like, i would mark it up not showing any interest then have one of my friends goes to the shop and buy it, and Bargain WOOOOOOO you really have to know how to do this, it's a skill, like an art.

One the word FOREIGNER is marked on your forehead you are going to pay almost double the price an indian would pay for the same item.

Congrats again Stina and Sujeet on the house, It's nice to see you guys around

Some great news on our end also

We bought a new house

My wife got a job  and more in line of what she used to do in Bangalore with more responsibility.

God is Great!!!!!

Sujeet said that's true in India, the birthday person pays for everyone else. Not fair in my opinion! :)

It's not usual for the birthday person to pay. The only place I know that ever did that was a place my mum worked at...on the birthday, the birthday person would buy everyone their favorite muffin!

If I'm going to pay for my own birthday celebration...it would be with friends though...not work peeps...hehehe!
