Co-Sponsor/Joint Sponsors

I dont know if there is a difference between a co-sponsor and a joint sponsor. But either way, we will have to have one (I'm sure we will anyhow by last years taxes I missed the point we need to be at for a household of 4 by $3,000.00 stinking bucks, I own my house - its completely paid off, own 1 car and I am buying another. I'm sure I could use the house, the car -the one thats paid off-, and what I have in my savings account as assests, but I'm not sure how to do that), and I have 3 friends who are willing to help me with this and who all meet the requirments and I have gone over everything with them about it, we have looked up the information on it and everything and read through everything and they all are still willing to co/joint sponsor us on this. I'm not (nor my children) on any kind of government assistance (i.e. medicaid, CHIPs, food stamps, ect). I work full time, and have had the same job for 6 years now.

Both of my children receive a small check (between $100 and $110 a month each) a month from Social Security because of their father, does anyone know if that will count against our visa application? I don't know if that counts as a type of welfare or not. I've never considered it as welfare, but I've never really thought about it or had reason to. I know I have to claim it on my income tax as income.

We were looking for answers to some questions we all have asked but can't find answers to online, so I thought I would ask here and see if anyone here might know or might be able to point us to a place where we can find the answers.

1. Can we use more than one co/joint sponsor (i.e. would we be able to use all 3 or just 2 or just 1)

2. In the case of those that are married, does the person's spouse have to sign the papers too? (I figured they would have to, but we weren't sure, but her husband is willing to sign as well)

3. In cases where a possible co/joint sponsor has another person living with them (i.e. an adult child) who works does that person have to agree to be a co/joint sponsor since they are a member of that household that has an income?

4. Will we be able to use any of my husbands assests (i.e. his savings or vehicle) on the affidavit of support?

5. Will having to use a co/joint sponsor lessen our chances of him getting a visa? (should I run out and find a second job lol)

6. Does it help that he has a place wanting to hire him once he has his papers? He didn't go looking for a job, we went to a place cos he was wanting to check out prices of some things he was wanting to get when he moved over here and he was talking with the owner who told him if he would like a job when he got his visa to bring him his papers that he would like to sign him if he didn't have plans to do something else workwise. Anytime my husband comes to visit he and the owner talk, and the owner still wants to hire him. If it does help, should we get it in writing? Should it be notarized (since pretty much everything else has to be?)

Sorry about the long list of questions I didn't want to post a bunch of seperate posts pertaining to the same thing.

You may not need a joint or co-sponsor. Assets such as cash and a home reduce the amount of income needed. Download an I-864 from the USCIS web site and go over it and you will see. Payjments from SS are surviors benefits and are not any form of welfare.

It is very possible that you won't need a Joint Sponsor. You just have to show that your assets make up 5 times the amount of what is missing from the household requirement. Therefore, if you are $3,000 off, then your assets should total at least $15,000.

My feeling is that it would not hurt to have a joint sponsor, anyway, if you are unsure about fulfilling the requirements. I don't think that NVC looks down on your having a joint sponsor; on the contrary, they want as much assurance as possible that the immigrant is not going to become a public charge. One sponsor that completely fulfills the requirements should be sufficient. In the event that you are sponsoring more than one immigrant, you may want/need multiple joint sponsors, but in the case of just your husband, one is enough. I am not sure about whether the husband would need to sign the papers as well; I don't think so, since there is no space on the I-864 for a second signature; it only asks you to list the members of your household, in which the husband would be included. However, if the husband is combining his income to meet the joint sponsor requirements, he may need to fill out a I-864A. You will need to check on that. Again, with the adult child question, that person would only sign a sponsor form if they were also combining their income with the primary joint sponsor to meet the requirements. Otherwise, it is just down to the person filling out the form.

I don't think you can use the immigrant's assets, but you might want to double check on that.

The social security income should not be a problem.

Not sure about the job for your husband, but I don't see how it could hurt to have supporting evidence that he has job opportunities readily available to him. An actual offer of employment from the company owner would be a benefit. However, that might be something to bring to the interview, rather than include in your AOS package.

I don't have answers for everything, but I hope that helps!

Thank you for the information, it was very helpful. I think I will go ahead and use a joint sponsor, just to be on the safe side. in addition to using my house as an assest because that will take me over the $3000.00 mark.
