I've been watching the last (sniff) season of Battlestar Galactica since it started up this month and so far I'm really impressed. Did anyone else see episode three last Friday? One thing I really love about the show is how they're fearless about the fate of the characters and no one is safe.

That's not really anything new though - Blake's 7 was the first show with a continuous storyline to have no qualms killing of major characters in shocking ways. In fact, most major post-Star Trek SF series have gone down that route: notably Farscape and Babylon 5. Its not really new.

I like BSG but it doesn't really blow me away. Though it has the trappings of Science Fiction that's not really what it is. The Colonials are a bit too close to the United States for my liking - I the fictional politics are supposed to mirror the real world, but I find it a little stiff. They do highlight the political/moral ambiguity of things like torture and terrorism but they don't really put forward any solutions for it.

I also don't really like some of the characters: Starbuck who seems to be angry all the time for no obvious reason, and Baltar with his weird interactive (sex-obsessed) hallucinations. In fact, most of the major characters seem to be variously bipolar or alternatively some sort of extremist.

They've also gone away from some of the characters they developed in earlier seasons - Boomer hasn't really had a dedicated storyline for a while now.
