I think this is mostly an old wives' tale, but there's probably some element of truth to it. I mean, in how many cultures is drinking ice cold beverages just not done? I'll tell you. Many.

Probably because many cultures didn't (and still don't) have easy access to a refrigerator and ice maker.

Why would they continue when it has become available? I'm thinking of Italy in particular - people just don't put ice in their drinks. It's not like they don't have access to ice.

In Mexico, the Mexicans did not put ice in their drinks because the quality of the water used to make ice was quite poor. It was likely to give as Number 6 so eloquently put, "you the squirts!"
