Their fair share? That would be 0, if they don't use the public transport system.

What about the benefits of an increase in size and mobility of the labor pool? That doesn't benefit the millionaires? Of course it does.

You can't be from the UK. I am guessing you are the American partner right?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

why not increase the fees and have it pay for itself?

Because the new expenses they need to find monies for are capital improvements to the system. New stations, new routes, new trains. This is a one-shot infusion of cash, the hike is only for 5 years.

so just raise the prices on tickets. it's only temporary, everyone can suck that up can't they ;)

oh but nailing the rich is so much more fun isn't it?

No one really gets nailed here.

The plan, if you're familiar with it (you aren't), is to dramatically increase the number of people who can commute into NYC. In addition, the plan is to rehabilitate existing lines and stations. What impact will this all have? It will make it easier for the millionaires who run the businesses to attract even more cheap labor from the outer boroughs and jersey and maybe even parts of PA (monroe, northampton and bucks counties).

This will make the millionaires even richer. And that's a good thing!

VJ Brokea$$ for NYC mayor!

Wow, what a concept! Have a system pay for itself instead of milking the rich.

That's what loans are for.

What's wrong with milking the rich? Udders that big and juicy are just begging to be milked!

Did I say that?

I said millionaires benefit from an increase in size and mobility of the labor pool. The implication being that millionaires are more likely to be job-creators than I am. What does not logically follow from that is your conclusion that all job creators are millionaires.

Anyone from the UK, which has one of the highest tax rates in the bloody world, would understand the benefit of taxing the rich. Whether they use something or not.

you stated the millionaires would benefit from this transportation deal and that's why they should pay for it. so if everyone does not work for them, then how can they benefit?

That's not really true. The UK doesn't have one of the highest tax rates in the world -

other European countries are MUCH worse.

I compared the rates before - see this thread (UK taxes vs US taxes).
