Hi. The answer to this question is a subjective one, because one man's "ghetto" can be another man's "paradise." I lived in that area a while back for about 6 years. I lived in Dunwoody and Alpharetta, which were both nice places, in my opinion. The Chamber of Commerce can provide you with information, not to mention the World Wide Web. I am sure that the other members on this forum who live in and around ATL can help to. Good Luck with your search.

I've never lived in Atlanta, but you might want to try www.city-data.com. They have forums that are city specific and it was extremely helpful to me when I was moving to Houston. It was a great starting point for me since I didn't really know anyone here that could give me advice. There are all sorts of people giving advice, tips, and opinions on cities and the best (and worst) areas to live in.

Have you considered looking for work first. Traffic is horrific in ATL, my best advice would be to find work and then search the surrounding areas to see where you'd like to live. It can take a while to find desireable work in Atlanta. Well, I guess I should say, professional office work. I think the service industry is thriving so you could get in there pretty quickly. Also, your price range is important. Some great areas could be out of your price range.

I agree, find the job 1st then look for housing nearby, cuz traffic can be hell.

I only work 1 mile from home which is very rare and a blessing!

I also live downtown in a transitional neighborhood in lofts, but 2 blocks away is "ghetto" hood type area.

You'll find a lot of that in Atlanta. If you wanna go upper upper class check out Buckhead.

Stay away (far away) from Bankhead.

I live in Atlanta and I would say the same: Find a job first!

Atlanta is notorious for claiming to have many jobs (which it does) but to actually GET a desirable job with benefits is another story. 1000 other people are breathing down your neck for that same position.

You WILL be subjected to interview after interview just because the job market is saturated with many people who come here looking for work. Therefore the companies get to be picky about everything under the sun.

Case in point:

When I started this journey, I decided to take a second job to make sure that I could do the sponsor part.

Do you know that I applied at a Borders and had to go through TWO interviews? The dang job only paid $7.00 an HOUR!!! And they kept me on part-time seasonal status and scheduled me 40+ hours a week. Why? To avoid paying needed benefits like health insurance, etc. Yeah, crazy. Needless to say when the holiday season was up, I didn't pass go, didn't collect $200 and RAN like the wind outta there. hahahah.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and start contacting the temp agencies like Adecco (very good agency) and Spherion (so so).

I do know that the following companies are hiring now:

Delta (Ramp Agents and Flight Attendants)

Comcast

Bellsouth

Coca Cola

Bank Of America

If your looking to get a job NOW where you can still have some free time, I would suggest becoming a flight attendant for Delta. They are SERIOUSLY trying to recruit people!!

Hope this helps.

Leedah
