A would-be Palestinian suicide bomber explains why she has changed her mind about violence against Israelis

The LTTE is notorious for its suicide bombings. Since the late 1980s, the group has conducted some 200 suicide bombings—far more than any other terrorist group.

200 suicide bombings since 1980's?

That's even less than the number of Hamas attacks in 2001.

Remember that Israel's security forces prevent close to 85-90% of suicide missions.

To get the number of actual suicide bomber missions, multiply the number of successful attacks by 6, then compare.

Thank you for sharing this topic about the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. It shows that terrorism exists alive and well in other conflicts around the world as well as the Palestinian/Israeli one.

According to this article 60,000 people have died since this conflict began in Sri Lanka. That is a lot, no matter which side was responsible.

I think it's time to stop seeing the 2 sides of the Middle East conflict as the Israelis vs. Palestinians, and start to see where the real divide is: the real "sides" are the peacemakers vs. those who advocate violence/intolerance. I think there is no going back on an Israeli state, but the Israelis should leave from the land they stole in the wars after 1948. Palestinians should live unoccupied on the West Bank and Gaza territories someday, alongside Israel. The real enemies are the ones who do not wish for a peaceful solution. The peacemakers, whether Palestinian or Israeli, should work together to fight these people.

Those who see the 2 sides as one ethnic group and/or religion against another are overly simplistic and prejudiced. Just my opinion.

Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence.

In 1948 disregarding UN resolutions the neighboring arab courtiers invaded Israel not only to prevent the creation of the Jewish state but also to prevent the creation of the Palestinian state. They succeed in half.

sooo disingenuous. the biggest myth of all in that whole mess is that the issue was ever about free speech. were you babbling on about free speech 4 years ago when jyllends-posten self-censored cartoons about jesus on the grounds that they were "offensive to readers". Christoffer Zieler, the editor explained back then, "I don't think Jyllands-Posten's readers will enjoy the drawings. As a matter of fact, I think that they will provoke an outcry. Therefore, I will not use them." as well, "Article 140 of the Criminal Code allows for a fine and up to four months of imprisonment for demeaning a "recognized religious community." "

were you babbling on about free speech 4 years ago when this happened? Danish Culture minister Brian Mikkelsen has changed the rules for subsidies to local radio in order to end public funds to Radio Oasen, Europe's only neo-Nazi radio station. "The aim of the change in the rules is to ensure that we no longer automatically provide subsidies to radios representing extremist views," he said. how "free speech" is it for denmark to change the rules for radio subsidies when presented with the big free speech test of neo-nazis? denmark doesn't seem to hold up to some of the bigger challenges of freedom of speech like blaspheming jesus or neo-nazis. it's only sacred when it comes to bigoted provoking of a religious minority. gooo denmark. gooo cherry picking "freedom of speech" wherever it randomly suits you.

Yes, luckystrike, what do you think about what ta_me_go said? Freedom of speech is one thing and deliberately hurting others' feelings by inflammatory remarks, deameaning a religious group is another thing. I am sure, like us, you did not like what Jeremiah Wright said. Did you like his comment "God Damn America?" I am sure, you didn't, we didn't either. Actually, I was offended by that remark. But hey, according to your definiton, the freedom of speech should prevail. You only want it to prevail when freedom of speech with inflammatory remarks, provocative activities hurt Muslims, but I am sure, you don't want to prevail when it hurts others.

Last time I checked, the US was attacked by Muslim suicide bombers on 9/11, long before Iraq.

Killed almost 3,000 people in one day. How many people have the "Tamil Tigers" killed over the years?

What a joke.

Whattttttt ? :o Have you told the U.S. government yet ?

Because all this time, they've been telling us that planes were hijacked and flown into buildings.

Obviously there is a lot of history between the people posting about which I am unaware, but as an impartial observer, someone who does not sympathize with Isreal's actions toward the Palestinians, I must say that the article sounded like good news to me. I can only imagine how a people oppressed for so long would find nuances to statements and questions that seem straightforward to people on the outside, but I think we have to remember that the intended audience is for people like me. I think people like me need to read more and more of these types of articles showing that there are large numbers of Palestinians who do not condone violence. I always read that these people exist but they are not given a voice or that the articles are written but are not given the attention they should be. I'm glad to read any article like this I can, on both sides of this issue and other issues like this.

If you will read my post again, you will see that my problem with the article was not that it showed that there are many Palestinians who don't condone violence against civilians (of COURSE there are -- only an ignoramus or a bigot wouldn't realize that.)

I am saying that the "reporter" gave no context at all -- she portrayed the issue of "suicide bombings" as the sum of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Yes. The planes were used as bombs. The terrorists flying the planes committed suicide.

Suicide. Bombs. Suicide bombers. Get it?

What in the world are you talking about ? There were exactly *13* Hamas suicide bombings in 2001 (4 of which didn't kill anyone except the bomber):

List of Hamas suicide bombings

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hamas...de_attacks#2003

And your ridiculous little mathematical "formulas" are completely unsubstantiated -- there is no evidence that the IDF prevents "85-90% of suicide bomber missions" -- well, other than maybe the IDF's own self-aggrandizing claims. But nobody believes their hype (except for people who still believe "Israel made the desert bloom.")

Actually, there is. You just need the right security clearance to access that information.

(if you count Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Al-Aqsa Martyrs and other Palestinian terror groups.)

Only about 30-40 of them were successful.

Hmmm. Well if you want to include 9/11 as an example of "suicide bombers," then you'd have to accept a lot more: of course the Japanese Kamikazes and Kaiten during World War II spring immediately to mind. The Luftwaffe also used "suicide pilots."

And suicide attacks have been used a lot more frequently that you'd apparently like to admit -- they were a tactic used by the Viet Minh against the French, the Japanese Red Army, the guy who assassinated Czar Alexander II, a Dutch lieutenant who blew up his own ship during the Belgian Revolution, a Prussian soldier at the Battle of Dybbol, the Knights Templar during the Crusades, and on and on and on. Heck even supposedly Samson vs. the Philistines.

But that wouldn't help your argument about "Muslim" suicide bombers being the "majority" of people who turn to these types of tactics. Nope. Not at all.

Actually, you don't know this for a fact.

But you are the one who made the claim about "Hamas" attacks -- but now you can't back it up.

And just for the sake of curiosity, how many "unsuccessful operations" did the Tamil Tigers have ?

Correction: I just checked my records from that time, and there were in fact over

100 suicide bombing attempts in 2001-2002. Not 200.

Still, 100 is an impressive number of attacks in the space of only two years,

vs. the Tigers' 200 attacks since 1980.
