I want to recommend this book to all of you. It has been extremely good reading and helpful to me especially since my husband is here. We have actually been going thru each chapter together = one by one. There are a few things I don't agree with, but I really like his method of teachings. Just a recommendation!!!

So you would recommend this book to an intercultural couple? It looked good to me, but the review made it sound like it was geared toward African couples who have immigrated to the US. It exactly the sort of book I'm looking for if it is helpful to mixed-culture couples.

It has been extremely helpful to us. I am a white female, age 40 and he is Nigerian male, age 37. We were having quite a few arguments and misunderstanding. I do believe alot of it was due to us not understanding what the other was trying to say. This guy won the VISA lottery and brought his family here about 10 years ago. He is now a Minister. He counsels men and women of all different cultures and does this on a daily basis. I am so impressed with his writings that I would seriously go to personal sessions with him if he were in Washington.

I purchased it on Amazon. There are 3 things which have been most inviting to me about this book:

1. The author uses the Bible as the foundation for his advice. He seems to have a good understanding of the temptations we all face in life in 2008, and gives advice in a loving, nonjudgemental way. (My dad was a Minister prior to his death and I grew up in a "glass house." As a result, I tend to be very stubborn and don't respond well when someone lectures me.)

2. Each chapter is based on a subject and stands on its own. So, you can take what applies to you and skip what does not. I like that because we can choose which subject to read about on a given night. The chapters are fairly short which allows us to read the chapter and then talk about it together.

3. Most of the issues he addresses have been very helpful (for me and my husband) in our cross-cultural marriage. Before my husband arrived, we did not argue much because our time was limited. Now that we are together each day, we see the good, bad, and ugly in each other. Little things which might not seem that important can cause major hurt. And now that we are reading this and focusing on this, we have learned that many of the misunderstandings we had were true "misunderstandings" and not intentional at all.

I've ordered "Peculiar Conflicts" but it is so short that I read it in less than an hour. I wanted something substantial and found it with this.

My husband and I have been married over 3 years, but we've never lived in the US together. We will do so soon and I know my husband is going to find it difficult in ways that he cannot imagine. As it is, we miscommunicate all the time and argue and end up hurting each other, and all our problems are due to cultural differences. This book sounds like it will be exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks for the review. I'm going to write my friend who is also married to a Beninese guy. She lived here in China with me before his immigration to Canada came through, and we used to commiserate all the time about our men and their communication styles. I think she'll like this book as well.

JJWashington,

I am so glad you found his books helpful. This book is beneficial for anyone who is married to an African coming to Western Culture.

HE embraces keeping the relationship together. Extremely respectful, appreciative and supportive of his wife. Did you get both of the books?

You are in great hands now!

I want to recommend this book to all of you. It has been extremely good reading and helpful to me especially since my husband is here.
