My fiance has his immigration interview on the 12th but his medical is not until the 20th. He called the Embassy and they said that it was fine to still have his interview and the medical can be sent in later, but they will not issue the Visa until they have the medical. However, we just noticed that he has to have his passport for the medical, but the Embassy will probably have his passport after the interview so they can put the Visa in it. Do you know if the doctor will accept the passport color copy if he explains that the embassy has his original passport, OR will the embassy let the doctor send in his passport with the medical exam?

Why don't he go and have his Medical done earlier?

Is it possible for him to explain this at the interview, they may let him take the passport away with him and then the medical surgery can send his passport on with his medical results to the embassy.

It's probably worth calling the embassy and asking them what to do in this scenario.

He can't. We did not expect that his interview would be so soon and even requested that they schedule it for after his medical but they said they were too full and this was better for him.

I see, so does this means that there is only 1 medical facility that can do his medical exams for him??

any case I don't think the embassy will issue a visa until they see his medical results. You may have to make another trip to the embassy for your visa.

There is not only one, but we don't have enough time before the interview to do it and you cannot just walk in you have to make an appt.

I really don't understand what the fuss is all about. Call the embassy, ask them what they suggest. Neither can complete their part of the bargain without the passport so I really doubt they're going to be difficult about it. Besides, the medical facility will be forwarding documents and x-ray to the embassy at which point they could slip in your passport. If you're not happy with that, then hand deliver your passport to the embassy following the medical. I presume the medical and consulate are in the same city at least?

Actually the medical is not near the embassy, the embassy is in Stockholm, fiance and medical 5 hours away.

I think this assumption is wrong. Generally (though I can't say for certain with your embassy), if there's still pending "to do" items at the interview time (like a medical), they will schedule a follow-up appointment to (basically) finish up the paperwork. He won't need to surrender his passport until the follow-up. So, he can attend the visa interview, and he'll still have his passport for the medical, and will have to go back to the embassy again to finalize everything.

Actually the medical is not near the embassy, the embassy is in Stockholm, fiance and medical 5 hours away.

Then you will need to arrange for the medical facility to forward your passport to the embassy with the medical results and x-ray, or your fiance could ensure the passport is sent secure to the embassy as soon as the medical is completed. This shouldn't delay your visa at all, given that the medical results are not immediately available.

These sorts of questions are best answered by the embassy since many aspects of this part of the process are country specific. e.g It is not possible to have a medical conducted outside of London, hence my assumption the medical would be in Stockholm.

I agree with Jesse that the embassy is highly unlikely to withhold the passport given that the medical is still pending.

Thanks everyone, you have eased my worries, he will call the Embassy on Monday and the doctor as well to ask if a copy of the passport will be sufficient for the medical appt. If not, I am sure the embassy will tell him what he can do, sending the passport back with the medical would be great, though:)

If the passport is needed at the medical and is used, it serves an identification purpose...there is nothing that they stamp or do with the passport at the medical...other than perhaps record the number so that once they mail the results to the consulate, the results can be paired w/ the person's file.

If your interview is before the medical, you can copy your passport as you intended and take your other form of ID with you. Also, including your consulate interview appointment letter would be good, to show the reason why you do not have your passport. Obviously this only becomes an issue if as Jesse G mentioned, the consulate witholds the passport after the interview, for visa issuance. But, I'm leaning more towards JG's explanation of things, that the passport will only be requested after the consulate receives your medical results and they're ready to issue the visa....they will not hold your passport the while they wait for the results of the medical.

Good luck,

-P
