I'll be looking for something that I can easily drive up a slushy steep hill.

Get a BMW X5 4.8i, man. 350 horsepower, 19 mpg hwy, 4-8 liter V-8.

Or get a good ol' American SUV if you don't want to spend $50k.

I really like the Mercury Mariner (starts at $21k) or the even bigger Mountaineer ($26k+).

They have hybrid versions of same, if you're into that sort of thing.

Is the Hybrid Escalade an Oxymoron?

Yep. And anyone who drives one is just a regular moron.

I agree. Who would want to drive a weak-### hybrid when you can have a powerful gas guzzler for less?

As far as I can tell, they don't really help the environment, sooooo why would I want to get one?

In our case, because our dinky little Elantra isn't doing too well going up those slushy slippery roads on the watchung mountains...

I meant a hybrid, not an SUV. Although I wouldn't be caught dead in one of those. Not after almost crashing in my dad's old Explorer 5 years ago or trying to park my dad's big truck. Not going to happen. My next car will be a VW Golf, I'm fairly certain. :)

AJ there are other options besides SUVs to make it up a dayum hill, you know.

You wouldn't. An Escalade owner who cares about the environment is an affront to the

great American ideal of profligate oil consumption!

I am all ears.

A powerful muscle car?

Naah. It appears that my wifes "temporary" job is going to become somewhat more long-term so I need to get her off the Elantra and into something more stable and heavier. It doesn't have to be a muscle car, just good enough to get up and down when it's watery/slushy. I actually like ANKOF's Forrester idea.

The Subaru AWD system is great. They were the pioneers in a way. If you want to have some real fun, go for the WRX.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

True, hybrids cost too much damn money.

Green Tax Guide: Buy a Hybrid Car or AFV and Save Taxes

If you bought a hybrid car in 2007 or plan to buy one before 2010, you may be able to save a huge chunk on your tax bill. Hybrids purchased or placed into service after December 31, 2005 may be eligible for a federal income tax credit of up to $3,400. In addition to hybrid vehicles, alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) also may be eligible for a federal tax credit of $4,000. Right now only Honda's compressed natural gas car has qualifed for the AFV tax credit.

A tax credit is a direct reduction in your tax bill, which makes them a lot better for your pocketbook than a tax deduction. While a tax deduction is subtracted from your income, and then you must still calculate taxes based on your current tax rate, a tax credit is subtracted directly from the taxes you've already calculated.

Credit amounts begin to phase out for any manufacturer that has sold over 60,000 eligible hybrid vehicles. There's a complex formula the government uses to figure out the tax credit on each model. The IRS will announce when a manufacturer exceeds the 60,000 sales figure. Right now only Honda and Toyota models are facing a phase-out of their tax credits.
