Okay... well, I'm looking at getting one of these titles, but I don't know which. I'm not too concerned about the guitar controllers, since they're interchangeable (although Rock Band Special Edition comes with not only a guitar controller, but a drum set and a microphone, so I can completely embarrass myself three ways, as opposed to only one with Guitar Hero), but I'm interested in what's more "fun" and the overall quality of the game.

First of all, my wife and I haven't played a lot of so-called "rhythm games" (the last one I played was probably Parappa The Rappa many years ago on the original PlayStation and I don't think she's played any at all) and our systems to play on are limited to the PC and PlayStation 2. We've been thinking about getting a PlayStation 3 in the near future, but right now it's just too expensive and since I have a large collection of PS1 and PS2 games, it wouldn't make much sense to purchase an Xbox 360.

Oh and when I've said "Guitar Hero" I've meant all four games -- Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and Guitar Hero Encore: Rock the 80s. I know the first two now come in a compilation set as well.

So basically... if anyone's played any and all of these, I'd really like to hear about it and which one you think is the best bet for my wife and I. Thanks ahead of time. :)

I have played both, a couple of times. I personally enjoyed Rock Band by far, because you can play as an actual band (rhythm guitar, bass, drums, vocals or combinations of the four) and you can "rescue" each other if someone is messing up -- that, and you can play for groupies, tour bus, fans and cash, and unlock more"clubs" to play in (which means additional new songs to try)-- it's too much fun. Just my humble opinion :D

We have both here at work and Friday afternoons before the end of the workday we drink beer and play. :P

I personally like guitar hero more because the singing part of Rock Band seems really lame. With Guitar Hero, when you're timing is right on and your pressing the right buttons, all you hear is beautiful music and not one of your work buddies thinking he's the next Mick Jagger.

The drums are cool on Rock Band though!

If you decide to get Guitar Hero...get the third installment, Guitar Hero III.
