How about, why else do they want to meet Americans for marriage? Which of them DON'T want to move to the US? By that standard, the only ones worthy of your love would be the ones who force you to move to their country. Anyone who moves to the US is an "opportunist."

did you tell rey that?

Charles, I said if you look at things the way Gary does, then anyone who moves to the US would be an "opportunist." Just read things a few times before posting.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere. You think the foreign women are just looking for man who can get them a green card. You should just come out and say it! We call those "opportunists". I'm not sure, but I think there are some foreign men doing that too.

Gary, if someone signs up for a program where they will meet American men, what other motivation do you imagine they have? They don't know anything about the men other than their nationality, and that was enough for them to sign up to meet them.

And the men going to that site are looking for something specific, too. They obviously aren't after a green card, so what is it? Have they decided that American women are too superficial? Too b!tchy? Or maybe they simply only find women of a certain race beautiful. I've known several guys who ONLY liked Asian women.

I wasn't searching for a British girl when Mags and I met. At the time, I wasn't even looking at all. However, if I HAD been looking, I likely would have been searching for someone from somewhere other than the US. I'd given up on Indiana women long ago. Seemed that every one I met was insane (literally), a drug addict, an alcoholic, had 3.4 children, or was only concerned with what kind of car I had, or didn't approve of my employment (bike shop, IT geek, whatever). (My last US "girlfriend" scored 100% with ALL of those)

Yes, it's a stereotype, but after several failed attempts, it was either search elsewhere or give up. I gave up. Then I met Mags.

I can completely understand why a USC would go searching for a SO from another country. Their reasons might not meet the approval of some, but that isn't something that should really be an issue, is it?

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Right or not, a lot of foreign women think American guys who are older are more mature and stable (yes financially as well as socially). Some of them see the younger American guys and guys in their home country as cheaters and, as my wife call them, "playboys". American guys like younger foreign women for obvious reasons. My wife and I have a 25 year age difference.

Gary, I'm not sure your helping your cause much by spouting these generalizations as defense of mail-order brides.

Everyone knows all foreign men under the age of 40 are playboys. In every country, too! Why do you think I snagged a Brit? PLAYBOY!

Of course it implies a benefit. Aren't you and your SO getting married because it benefits you both in some way?

The problem people have is that it's all they see is that the foreigner gets to come to the US, and they assume that's the ONLY reason they would marry the American. They see the American with some advantage looking for a mate in a foreign country, and it seems like that's not fair somehow, or that they're taking advantage of the foreigners.

Of course, as we all know, life and relationships are more complicated than that.

Gary, as far as I can tell, you're ignoring what's logical (if she signed up to meet Americans, obviously moving to America was on her mind) because it's uncomfortable for you. I'm not saying there are any stereotypes here. Maybe she signed up to meet an American and then fell in love with one, so she got to go to the US AND be with someone she loved. I'm not saying that doesn't happen some or even most of the time. I'm just saying I personally would find it uncomfortable that I was looking for love among people who saw me first as a greencard, then, after awhile, as a person, if I'm lucky.

There's no stereotyping there. That's just the truth. You keep evading my questions, and I can understand why they might make you uncomfortable, so that's fine.

Obviously meeting Americans is on their mind, It would be silly to dispute that. But you extend that to assume that the foreigner sees you first as just a green card, which is not always the case. What's the percentage of cases like that? Who knows? Some people would like us to think it's all of them. Fortunately it's not.

No it doesn't make me uncomfortable at all, but of course that's one of your assumptions. This is an interesting subject to me for obvious reasons, and I'm just trying to do my part to enligthen some of the less informed here. What question would you like me to answer?

They think (right or wrong) American men make better husbands. Some of them have seen their cousins or friends marry guys in the US and for the most part they are happy. I don't want to generalize about the men in any particular country, but if you went to some of those foreign countries you would probably understand why they think that. Personally I think it's exagerated, but that's just my opinion.

BTW, before we were engaged I told my wife I might like to live in her country someday. She liked that idea because she would be closer to her family. It will be awhile before my in-laws can see their grandson. My wife says her father likes to go around the neighborhood showing everyone pictures of his grandson.
