In last night’s Democratic debate in Las Vegas, John Edwards, in one of his strongest moments of the event, highlighted how often military veterans are left behind after they serve. “Tonight across this country, 200,000 men and women who wore our uniform and served this country patriotically, veterans, will go to sleep under bridges and on grates,” Edwards said.

Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, talking with progressive talk-show host Ed Schultz, wasn’t impressed.

O’Reilly: Well, we’re still looking for all the veterans sleeping under the bridges, Ed, so if you find anybody, let us know, because that’s all the guy said for the last three nights–

Schultz: Well they’re out there, Bill. Don’t kid yourself.

O’Reilly: They may be out there, but there’s not many of them out there. Okay? So if you know where one is, Ed–

Schultz: Well, actually, now, wait a minute–

O’Reilly: Ed, Ed. If you know where’s a veteran, sleeping under a bridge, you call me immediately, and we will make sure that man does not do it, is not there.

It’s not altogether clear who O’Reilly was referring to with “we,” but given the context, it sounded like O’Reilly was vowing publicly, in front of a national television audience, that either his show or his network (or both) would provide the resources and housing necessary to protect homeless vets.

This is one of those times when it’s a very good thing O’Reilly speaks before he thinks.

I hope they come forward so we will know the real count. The Dem's are always throwing out unsubstantiated numbers out that are picked up by the liberal media and echoed.

Another Red herring.

Like when Regan was president it was the constant drum beat of the homeless, the homeless then after Clinton takes office do you hear about the homeless? No, not at all. Were there still homeless, Yes as many or more. Then as soon as Bush takes office its all about the homeless again.

All part of the agenda to pull at your heart strings. This is why I say it is all about emotion with the left's arguments. Never facts!

My beloved Joy is here, married and pregnant!

Baby due March 28, 2009

And if he follows through with his pledge will that change your opinion of O'Reilly?

Perhaps. Will it change your opinion of him if he doesn't? ;)

I don't think I ever stated my opinion of him. I find him entertaining but that is about it. So if he doesn't I guess my answer would be no it wouldn't.

Well here in Chicago I am pretty sure I've seen more than 5 begging on different intersections- in this tropical winter we're having, too. Then again, do I believe a hand-written sign saying they're a veteran or do I believe a politician, or do I believe a [bad] entertainer?

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

There are plenty of philanthropists (George Soros for example) that we both would probably have something negative to say about, no matter what charitable things they've done.

I'm going to guess that your aim was to suggest that no matter what good O'Reilly may do in his life, I still won't 'like' him. I personally don't know the guy, so my opinions of him are only based on his television persona, which, IMO, has plenty to be desired.

I am sure there are some vets that are homeless. But I doubt the 200,000 figure. I knew some homeless vets in the past. (4 to be exact) Every one of them were homeless by choice. They knew that there was help available through charity (Salvation Army, churches ect.) or through the government. For their own reasons they chose not to get help. You can't force help on someone that does not want it.

I agree with what you say here. I also doubt Edwards' claim of 200,000, just like I also doubt Bush's claims of WMDs in Saddam's arsenal that was not acquired through us or our brokers.

On the other hand... the 5 that I've seen are street vets, not ones that I know personally. They could be telling the truth, and from what I read on their cardboards its not a choice they took to beg in 20 degree weather.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

O'Reilly is a rhetorician. If he gets called out on this it will be silly, but in keeping with the way he operates towards others. Anyone makes a big hoo-ha he'll probably just do some donations of extra charity work to preserve his precious public reputation as a "culture warrior".
