If they are drilling in international waters or even in Cuba's, its not actually ours. So why do we care exactly?

Indeed. It doesn't figure into my definition of theft. To "steal" something you have to own it in the first place.

Manifest Destiny for some now extends beyond our legal borders. Sounds like some arcane Dr. Evil plot for world domination, piloted by all those darn liberals in power right now!!

before you get too spun up about that, you might wish to find out what territorial waters mean and how far they extend before it is considered international waters ...............

SLANT DRILLING

There are new reports out circulating that Chinese firms are planning to slant drill off the Cuban coast near the Florida Straits, tapping into U.S. oil reserves that are estimated at 4.6 billion to 9.3 billion barrels.

What part about slant drilling into our reserves don't you people get?

I understand your point Troll, If we are still the ones at risk for the spill, shouldn't we at least get the jobs that it would provide.

I wonder if people are forgetting that Cuba has its territorial waters also - between that and the US side there has to be at least some sort of "international" buffer zone.

Don,

Is there any international law or any treaties we've signed with the Chinese that would govern the practice of 'slant drilling'? I have no idea, let me know if you do. I can't imagine this is something the US government is unprepared for or hasn't thought about.

I mean c'mon foks, seriously... if it was a problem in relation to our maritime territory whereby some sort of violation was being conducted by China, we would have taken care of it from the beginning. Otherwise, we have the VJ Marines to the rescue instead of Dolphins, Sharks, or Bass with lasers on their heads.

i just looked, the usa claims about 50 miles out - should be interesting if china's drill bit crosses that line.

I agree. Even though territorial waters go as far as 12 nautical miles out from the coastline. I actually knew that since H.S. Geography... and the economic zone of exclusion goes out to 200 nautical miles, but is not enforceable when that limit obviously extends into the territorial waters of a neighbor nation.

The US has a contiguous claim of 24 nautical miles, though, but I don't remember that being ratified as of yet.
