Everybody knows jail is no picnic.

But three Kane County inmates, in a $2 million lawsuit filed this week, say the food served in the jail is unreasonably "distasteful and disgusting."

A sheriff's department official says the chow is the same eaten by officers -- and they're not complaining.

The three inmates gripe in the suit that not only is the food often cold and the baked goods "soggy," the calories and nutritional value are "not up to par."

Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler counters, "We can't serve a cajun chicken breast." Meals are somewhat generic because they have to be served to a large, diverse population, he said.

Besides, "Our officers eat the same food as the inmates, and I have yet to hear an officer complain about soggy cookies or bland food," he said.

The suit, filed against Sheriff Pat Perez, says the food is provided by Aramark Food Service. The civil suit was filed in Kane County Court by inmates Michael Nance, Devalius McDonald and Deandre Clemons.

Nance, 55, of Aurora, is being held on charges of felony retail theft and felony burglary for allegedly breaking in to an Aurora liquor store in May, according to court records.

Clemons, 17, of Belvidere, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church and obstruction of justice in October.

McDonald, 52, of Carpentersville, was charged with criminal sexual assault in July.
