A 19-year-old Mesa woman has been indicted on second-degree murder and child abuse charges in the death of her newborn baby.

Tiffany Lee Hecker gave birth to a boy on Jan. 22 in a toilet, then picked up the child and put him back in the toilet, according to Mesa police and the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. She later took the body of baby Jeremy Lee Davidson to Chandler Regional Medical Center.

Hecker was arrested by Mesa police Nov. 27 after an autopsy performed by the county Medical Examiner's Office found the baby was alive at birth.

The autopsy found the baby was full term and did not die a natural death. The death was ruled a a homicide and Hecker was arrested a short time later.

"I commend the work done by our investigators and the Mesa police to hold this defendant accountable for her actions," County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a prepared statement. "Our decision to move forward in this case came after a careful review of the evidence."

Hecker told investigators she never took a pregnancy test or sought prenatal health care, but thought she could be pregnant.

Police said Hecker's boyfriend, Jeramie Davidson, 19, told investigators that he didn't know Tiffany was pregnant and didn't know why she didn't tell him.

In January, Hecker told police she felt ill about 2 a.m. when driving home from her boyfriend's house.

She went into the bathroom and gave birth while on the toilet at about 5:30 a.m. Hecker, then 18, said the baby made a sound and said she saw his stomach move. Then, she picked him up out of the toilet and he stopped moving, she said. Hecker then put the baby back in the toilet and delivered the placenta.

After placing her son on towels on the bathroom floor, Hecker said she told her mother that she had given birth and that the child was dead.

Hecker told police her mother urged her to place the baby in a plastic bag and then into a trash can.

About 10 minutes later, she said she realized it wasn't the right thing to do and took him out and put him in the trunk of the family car, according to a police report. Hecker's mother brought the baby and the placenta to Chandler Regional Hospital, and hospital staff called Chandler Police, according to police.

Police questioned Hecker, who said she did not harm the baby intentionally or accidentally, according to the report.

I blame the toilet.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
