Happy Birthday to the old bat!

How many people here actually love the royal family? Neil thinks that they're a pile of ####### to put it lightly. I was just curious if that was something shared by few or many.

I probably wouldn't go as far as to say a pile of ####### but I just think of them as a complete irrevelance; I am as interested in them as they doubtless are in me. I do object, however, to the idea of being someone's subject.

It can be a bit awkward in the US as it's one of those subjects that people like bringing up as, I suppose, they think it's a point of shared interest. I find myself biting my tongue when people over here bring up the topic of Di and bleat on about her as if she'd been the second coming.

I don't really see the point in the Royal family apart from being an iconic representation of the UK for the rest of the world, they do seems more of a tourist thing nowadays. The Queen has no real say in the laws of the land, she has to sign every law that is passed in parliament (and she really has to, there is no choice if she disagrees).

I disagree about Di though. Ok she wasnt the "second coming" but the nation did love her and she did a lot of good things for charities here. I found her a breath of fresh air compared to the stufiness of the monarchy and I hope her sons follow in her footsteps.

there's a lady who lives on our street in Newcastle that is in love with every single thing about the royal family. she threw a party for the queen's 80th birthday.

Did the Queen turn up for it? Bit ungrateful if she didn't.

join me in toasting Her Majesty and wishing her the best of health, long to reign over our illustrious Empire..

No I don't think they will, thank you very much. The empire of annoying idiots bringing forcing their particular brand of ignorance and gluttony on the world is very far down my list of things to celebrate.

No thank you!!!! I have green blood coursing through my veins not blue!!

Green blood, eh?

You are Ming the Merciless and I claim my five pounds. ;)

omG I read that with an 'e' on the end of it

Im not an avid supporter of the royal family by any means, but they do bring in millions of pounds a year through tourism revenue. Yes they live a privileged life, but that comes at a price. They are forever in the spotlight, with every move scrutinised. They of course have public duties to perform and therefore, do have to "work". They really didn't have much choice in being born into their family but at least they are getting on with it.
