Girl, 10, Arrested for Using Knife to Cut Food at School

I loathe zero tolerance policies. No need really to confiscate the knife, but even if there was, what's the problem with having the knife go in the principal's office for the day?

All good and well until something happens. Then the teachers and principal are the ones responsible and accountable.

For example, people criticize schools for zero touching policies yet their little brains fail to realize that this policy was probably implemented in the first place because some like-minded self centered stupid parent made some sort of complaint for them to implement that.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Doesn't matter. Still makes it a dumb policy that treats eating lunch like a threat. It might not be the fault of the school, but that doesn't make it a good policy to send a ten year old to juvenile detention for cutting her meat.

In my experience, it's just as likely to be the rich, well-educated parents siding with their child over the teacher.

I'm sure.

"I had my dad proofread this and he says it deserves an A"

"Your dad isn't in my class."

That still doesn't answer the question I asked ;)

These parents tend to brag about their jobs. I have been to school orientation days and heard it personally.

PS I live in one of the richest counties in the country and hear these sort of idiots talk ###### in front of their kids all the time.

A friend of mine who is a professor at George Washington Uni was saying how a student had her dad organize a meeting with him to discuss her daughters grade. Apparently she told her daddy that it was not fair.. LMAO

I thought it was a joke and that he was pulling my leg about it. Generation Y cannot be that dumb and spoon fed right.

It goes both ways though. When my uncle was in elementary school, he came home crying one day that he didn't want to go to hell. Apparently the nuns told the class "if you tell anyone what goes on here (mostly physical abuse) you'll go to hell." My grandmother marched up to the school, yelled at the nuns, yelled at the priest, and pulled them out of the school.

Sure glad she supported her kids over the teacher.

I miss the "good old days"....

When I was in school, way back in the dark ages, half of the male students carried pocket knives to school. Likewise, an inspection of the parking lot would show that 50% of all trucks had a gun rack in the back window with at least one rifle sitting on it. There were no school shootings, no school stabbings, only an occasional fight.

Tell me again that it's just us old people saying incorrectly that kids have gotten worse...that kids are the same as always. Where were the school shootings and stabbings 20 years ago? Hell, I brought a 357 Magnum to school when I was in High School. It was to show it to a friend of mine, not to blow anyone away. It wasn't loaded, so it wasn't taken. I kept it in my locker, and then took it home after school. No one cared.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Spoiled kids and nothing new. Look at Paris Hilton. You can have money but still not be educated, and indeed you can be educated without necessarily making much money. Isn't the latter the experience of most teachers...?

Depends on the district. Some districts in NJ/NY pay quite well.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

The issue at hand in America is what happened between those years to now which has caused so many kids to go crazy. I certainly do not blame the teacher as their hands are tied and they are bogged down with a million and one other things to do rather than actually teach. They are a parent, guidance councilor etc to so many kids. I also do not blame the kid as they do not know any better. Hence why they are a kid.

From my own experience and reflection it all comes down to parenting or lack of. When I look back I realize that all of the bullies and trouble makers in my school came from broken families, parents who did not care or had parents who let them be. Let them set the rules, rather than proactively being involved in their life..

School officials say the Ocala 5th grader had brought a piece of steak for her lunch, and a four and a half inch steak knife with which to cut it. According to the report, a couple of teachers took the utensil and called authorities, who arrested the girl and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center.

Students sitting next to the girl at lunch say she didn't threaten anyone with the knife; she just used it to cut up her food.

The girl's uncle, Kenneth Thomas, told MyFOXOrlando that his niece had to ride in the back of a patrol car.

Captain Jimmy Pogue of the Marion County Sheriff's office said the 10-year-old was not treated like a criminal.

"I don't want people to feel like we're arresting 10-year-olds, handcuffing them, and hauling them off in a back of a patrol car and taking them to jail," Pogue told MyFOXOrlando. "That's not the circumstance."

The report will be turned over to the State Attorney's office and they will decide if to follow up with the weapon's charge.

The questions are: if they had removed the knife and contacted the parents, what would the parents have said? If they had just removed the knife and contacted the parents, what would the other parents have said?

If you do anything to upset a parent about anything, you will rue the day. The fact is, there are bad parents and they make school a much less effective place for learning. Someone ought to educate those people about parenting skills.

If I found out my child had taken a knife to school without my knowledge --and that would be the only way it went there--grounding would be only the start of punishment. Why? Because my child knows what is appropriate for school. Wow, talk to your child and discuss issues that pertain to them. why hasn't someone thought of that before??

OH! Don't get me started! When my son was in 3rd grade I got a call from his school prinipal that my son was in his office and he was in trouble because he had a knife in his lunchbox. OK....yeah....I did pack a PLASTIC knife in his lunch box.....is that what he was talking about? Sure thing! I had been packing a plastic knife so he coule make his PB&J (with his autism the sandwich didn't "look right" to him when lunch came around so this is why I did this). Oh yeah, this prinipal got an earfull from me and then some! Then later I found out that the on-duty cop (donut and coffee drinking only cop) had to sit down and talk to my son about the danger of this knife! Things are getting WAY out of control. It's BS.

stuff like this makes me wonder how i survived being a kid. i remember my dad telling me how he used to go hunting as a kid - just pick up the gun and walk down the highway thumbing a ride - which he'd get. i can only imagine the fiasco that would ensue should someone try that today.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

I think it's a little overboard "weapons charges" I mean come on she was eating her lunch! I remember kids bringing pocket knives to school all the time when I was in elementary school and no one said a thing. Times have changed.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.
